2018 Hockey NCAA Tournament Field - NoDak - 03-18-2018 05:24 PM

The field was announced today, but these teams aren’t actually chosen. A Pairwise system is used that determines the at large, and a committee seeds them and sends them to locations

Field:

St Cloud St vs AFA
Minn St-Mankato vs Mn Duluth

Cornell vs BU
Michigan vs Northeastern

Ohio St vs Princeton
Denver vs Penn St

Notre Dame vs Mich Tech
Providence vs Clarkson

For the first time since 1977, one of Minnesota, BC, and UND did not get in. UND missed for the first time in 16 years. Understand that there was some girlfriend issues disrupted the internal chemistry. Their were five teams that won autobids that would not have been in otherwise. Minn lost out be 0.0001 pairwise point to Minn-Duluth for the last spot. All three of those teams were eliminated the last weekend, even though Minny didn’t play.

Big Ten - 4 teams
NCHC - 3
Hockey East - 3
ECAC - 3
WCHA - 2
Atlantic Hockey - 1

Has Minnesota-Duluth overtaken Minnesota as the flagship in the State of Hockey?

4 straight years blueblood Wisconsin missed. That would be like KU, UK, Duke, or UNC missing 4 straight years in hoops.

ND hockey won the Big Ten regular season title, tournament title and will be a #1 seed.

Minn-Duluth has a recent national championship while the Gophers was more than ten years ago. Minn-Duluth has often been better than Minnesota with their current coach. They were in the same conference for two generations, so some times they would be better. Expect Minnesota’s coach to get fired soon.

The best two coaches at Minnesota schools are probably at St Cloud St and Minn St-Mankato. St Cloud St has been rated #1 in the country in much of the last half and could make a run in the tournament. They have some skilled talent. Think SCSU shelled the gophers when they met.

At least Wisconsin has turned a corner and as it and Mich St weighed down the entire league badly. The Big Ten only had one team last year and this year its 4 of 7.

The flagship Hockey East schools seem to have fallen off the map.

Maine, UVM, UNH, and UMass haven’t done anything for years. But UMass-Lowell has done well except this year. Don’t emulate your fellow state schools.

Minnesota’s hockey coach Lucia has stepped down today. Guess the Gophers were tired of being the fourth best hockey team in the state.

Notre Dame becomes the first Frozen Four competitor. It has now been to the FF from three different conferences: the CCHA, Hockey East, and Big Ten.

RE: 2018 Hockey NCAA Tournament Field - TerryD - 03-24-2018 10:03 PM

ND beat Providence 2-1 on a goal with 27 seconds left in regulation.

The Irish are in the Frozen Four for the second year in a row.

Congrats to ND for finding a sport they matter in these days!

RE: 2018 Hockey NCAA Tournament Field - NoDak - 03-24-2018 10:39 PM

Minn-Duluth punches its ticket for spot #2.

Ohio St vs Denver

BU vs Michigan

Two more games tomorrow.

Were you born an a$$hole or did you have to work at it?

From 1981 until recently, did Clemson "matter" at all?

When Clemson football played ND in 2015 at home, Clemson won by...two points. It had to hang on for dear life, too.

The talent disparity didn't look so much different in that game. Not so much to brag about, in my opinion.

P.S. "A sport they matter in" as in any sport, right?

ND basketball has two recent Elite 8 appearances and won an ACC title in the last few years.

Clemson hasn't been in the Elite 8 since 1980. It has never won the ACC, to my knowledge.

ND football won 10 games two of the last three years. It beat LSU in a New Years Day bowl this past season.

ND women's basketball is in the Elite 8 for something like 5 of the last six years.

ND lacrosse was in the Final Four in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

ND men's soccer won a national championship in 2015.

ND fencing just won the 2018 national championship, giving them back to back national titles.

Try again with your snark. You fail.

Michigan goes to the Frozen Four too.

DU vs Ohio St for the last spot.

RE: 2018 Hockey NCAA Tournament Field - NoDak - 03-25-2018 08:04 PM

Ohio St leads DU 5-1 late in the third.

Looks like three Big Ten teams will make the Frozen Four, one year after the we’re nearly the crappiest hockey conference.

Ohio St vs Michigan should be a big Frozen Four game.

RE: 2018 Hockey NCAA Tournament Field - dxdtdemon - 03-25-2018 11:38 PM

Ohio State-Michigan for the title might end up being the most watched collegiate ice hockey game ever, although they first have to win their next game, and ESPN's decline would probably keep the ratings down.

RE: 2018 Hockey NCAA Tournament Field - IWokeUpLikeThis - 03-26-2018 12:10 AM

Michigan hockey will draw viewers, but will Ohio St? Went to one of their games and the arena was kinda empty, but that was 7 years ago.

They’ve come a long way since then. Didn’t their last coach get fired for feuding with the AD over facilities? I heard it was over the practice rink.

RE: 2018 Hockey NCAA Tournament Field - dxdtdemon - 03-26-2018 12:28 AM

While I agree that the Buckeyes don't have that many regular fans, there would probably be a lot of casual viewers from the aspect of "Ohio State plays Michigan for a national championship in something" or "Ohio State plays Notre Dame for a national championship in something". Boston College's ESPN3 server crashed four times during the Ohio State-Boston College opening round game in the women's tournament from all of the unexpected internet traffic from Buckeye fans.

I remember not long ago College Hockey Purists saying the B1G would produce bad Hockey and would fail ... most of those in Minnesota.

Overall fantastic. Go Bucks!!!

Definitely a great year for the Big 10 and hopefully we can build on it going forward. Living in Minnesota and being a Wisconsin hockey fan I definitely hear a lot around the Twin Cities from alums of other Minnesota schools and of North Dakota about how weak Big 10 hockey is.

Now if Minnesota and Wisconsin can get back to where they can be then the league is going to be a big time power.
