American Partners with ACC On Football Officiating Alliance - CoastalJuan - 03-19-2018 02:21 PM

The American Athletic Conference has partnered with the Atlantic Coast Conference on a football officiating alliance that will allow both leagues to work together on a wide range of officiating matters, including scheduling, training, development, recruitment, retention and evaluation.

The alliance, effective immediately, will be administered by Dennis Hennigan, the ACC’s Supervisor of Football Officials, who will manage the assignment, hiring and training of game officials. The American will name its own Supervisor of Football Officials, who will be responsible for the weekly evaluation of officials for the conference and will be the primary point person between the conference and its 12 head football coaches.

“We are excited to partner with the ACC regarding the administration of our football officiating program,” said American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco. “This alliance will provide both conferences with a deep roster of the best college football officials and will provide for greater efficiency and consistency in the training and evaluation of officials as well as enhanced opportunities for the recruitment of officials. We look forward to working with Dennis Hennigan, who was regarded as one of the top on-field officials in college football and has since become a leader on the administrative side. I also want to thank Commissioner John Swofford for his cooperation in reaching this mutually beneficial arrangement”

As a result of the alliance with the ACC, Terry McAulay, who had been The American’s Coordinator of Football Officiating since 2013, will no longer serve in that role.

“We thank Terry McAulay for his years of dedicated service to the American Athletic Conference and to college football,” said Aresco. “Terry has done an outstanding job for our conference and has been a model of integrity and professionalism. We wish him well in the future.”

Hmmm. Not sure what I think about this. Maybe we'll learn to cheat better by learning it from the "pros" ?

If this helps bring quality officiating into the AAC, then I am all for it.

That's what I was thinking. Even the perception should be better. There might be less b****ing about using our refs for games if we share a pool of refs with another conference.

I like the idea of having our officiating style and on the field enforcement priorities mirror one of the power conferences. I see no real down side. Frankly, I think our officiating has been pretty sub-par almost across the board (basketball is the worst).

When I think of ACC officiating I think of Ron Cherry and that does not inspire any confidence. He’s possibly the worst college football official there is.

As long as we keep Teddy V, I am happy.

I misread what you said at 1st glance and thought of Don Cherry.

The AAC is a Pow6r conference, ACC fanboy.

The ACC is definitely going to be "giving the business" to the AAC in this deal. Probably ensures that all ACC/AAC games will be officiated by the ACC.

That was my first thought. Not a win for us IMHO.

He’s enough of a clown to wear that.

Possibly.... but to be honestly the AAC officiating has been horrendous IMHO since the conference's existence. Can't be any worse, even if they throw the ACC a bone in head to head matchups (based on the link, it is not as if we will have the same guys from the ACC crews doing our games. Our guys will just be reporting to the guys in ACC HQ).

I interpret this as the ACC considering us a Pow6r conference.

Its nice to partner on this with a conference with solid resources. That said, the MAC does something similar with the Big10...so I wouldnt read too much into it.

RE: American Partners with ACC On Football Officiating Alliance - GrayBeard - 03-19-2018 04:56 PM

CUSA did the same deal with the Big 12.

The circle is complete.
MW/Pac12
MAC/Big10
Sunbelt/SEC
CUSA/Bi12
AAC/ACC

To AAC schools...with this new alliance do not schedule the NC 4 schools OOC anymore. You'll find out soon enough who all the refs pay homage to.
