Spring Game 2018 - Hurricane Drummer - 04-04-2018 09:43 AM

Is anyone going to the Spring Game this Saturday (April 7th)?

What are you looking for? What are your expectations?

I'd like to see how the quarterbacks and receivers are connecting with each other. And also how the defense as a whole looks. There's a lot of new blood on that side of the ball along with guys coming back from injury and such. Something else to watch for (although we may not see much of) is the placekicking. Redford Jones has to be replaced and it will be an important job to fill.

Unfortunately I will not be able to go. I committed to something else before realizing (or knowing?) what day the Spring Game was on. So I'll have to get the scoop from everyone else on how things went.

I am going to try and make it, though no guarantees.

I'm interested to see if skipper has improved his choice of throws. I felt like last year he would loft it when we needed a rope, or would drive the ball to the reciever when a floater would have allowed for a catch and run. Also to see if President has improved his throwing. He made the right reads but was inaccurate and cost us. The recievers have to find a way to get separation too, some crisp routes and bursts out of cuts are what I would like to see.

A pirrana like mentality and strong fundamentals in space are major areas needing improvements on defense.

Special teams, special teams, special teams. Close games always come down to that. We had plenty last year and I expect a bunch again this year. We need the advantage here to have a chance at a bowl game.

Also should we maybe post everything on the main board for now? We have 5 or 6 who post on a frequent basis. Might help the traffic and conversations if we talk in one place till we get more traffic.

Don't think President is playing yet. Still recovering from injury.

Works for me!

I think you're right. I wouldn't say that's necessarily a bad thing though. Other than the fact the guy's been physically injured which I wouldn't wish on any of our players.

Ive been checking the weather for Saturday and it looks like it might be a little chilly, but apparently dry. My main reason for going will be to pick up my TU "mug" for being one of the first 400 fans to renew.

Nice looking tumbler.

Game is at 11am and always free to the public.

Sure hope those QBs are improved. We will see.

Hope to see you at the game.

Me too! :)

I see your point. I agree too always hate to see someone injured, especially a player like President who will lean heavily on his athleticism.

Extra reps for other QBs could be a positive. Hopefully President can make a full recovery and get back to speed over the summer.

Good looking out. I expect an in depth team report and a casual scout of fan turn out and the fan's general mood. You decide how to divide the work up.

So I ended up going to the Spring(winter) game. The weather cancelled my other plans.

A few quick observations:

Skipper didn't look bad. Didn't make many mistakes. But also didn't go deep often. Boomer was about the same. Be in didn't do much. Zach Smith can really throw the ball. He looked good when the 2nd string line held up for him.

The runnijng backs looked good.

The defense seemed improved. It was good to see some DB's get some INT's and pass breakups. And we don't even have all our starters back yet.

We have some big boys on both O and D lines.

It's hard to tell when we play against ourselves, but things looked promising for next season.

I'd rather see us looking good than bad in the spring game lol.

A lot of our games were close last year and you're more likely to win those by not making mistakes. In fact in general that's a good way to win in general, so game mananging is fine for me.

Did the weather affect the throwing? I know some qb's don't like throwing in the cold. Probably were worried about injury as well if we just didn't have deep routes called. Avoiding injuries is as important to progressing this coming year as learning the playbook and getting coached reps.

The weather didn't seem to affect the throwing too much. Maybe they didn't call as many deep ball plays because of it, but we wouldn't know that info. The qb's short passes (and a couple long passes) looked pretty good to me. Boomer even put one right on the WR for a (30-40ish yard) TD pass.
