Mount Ida students in good standing will be given automatic admission to our Dartmouth campus. I believe athletes from Mount Ida will be able to talk to the athletic staff from UMass Dartmouth about opportunities on that campus tomorrow (April 9th).

Like how they blamed Oberlin problem on 80 fewer students in the incoming class, ha. Problem with schools is tuition way too high and out of control expenses. I mean why go to Oberlin for $70,000 when you could go to Miami for what $15,000 per year ?

These are the mergers that have occurred in Georgia

What does this have to do with college sports and realignment? Does anyone care about this besides DavidSt?

Who crowned you Moderator?

You seem to like dropping into threads to say “who cares” and then insulting DavidSt (for what? to score popularity points as a newbie?).

Here’s a tip - don’t click on it. You may not find it relevant, but 4 posters responded so there’s interest somewhere.

Thanks for this thread, DavidSt, and for bringing unique information. There’s always a place for fresh perspectives (and DavidSt presents his with utmost respect to a hostile crowd).

Actually useful information. Mergers and closings indicate that institutions are struggling.

Plus, it does effect the college sports and and conferences. Like Johnson State merged with Lyndon State to be known as Northern Vermont University at the D3 level. Both schools played in the same conference.

Mount Ida and Wheelock have D3 sports, plus John Wesley play sports in the NCCAA. Mount Ida athletes will go to UMass. Dartmouth while Wheelock athletes go to Boston U. The teams of the 2 Vermont schools will be merged into one team.

Oberlin is a historic college. It was one of the major schools in the old days which Mount Ida was.

Plus occasionally trickles to the D1 level.

Texas-Pan American merged with UT-Brownsville a few years ago, forming the Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros of the WAC.

Oberlin had an enrollment shortfall of 80 students (2815 students to predict 2895) so its hardly closing its doors. But the larger point is who wants to pay 69,000 dollars a year to graduate with a history degree? That is 276,000 for 4 years.

Thirty years ago a school like that would have been 100,000 but someone could graduate from there and get into sales make 100k within 5 years of graduation. If they were the real deal. Today it will take you 10 years and a graduate degree to be able to get there.

The declining college pool of students is hurting the smaller educational players. There is not enough students to draw on and they don't offer enough value to attract anyone.

The bigger public players, those in D1 knew this was coming so they invested in their campuses, put in sustainable cost structures for faculty added programs that were in line with market demand.

In Ohio, Urbana University is now a branch of Franklin University (Columbus). UU maintains its sports in Div. II or III.

Apparently a lot of folks from New England. We have boatloads of those kinds of schools and plenty of suckers that think every school that costs $60-70k might as well be Harvard (and I'd make the argument that even Harvard isn't worth a quarter million dollars).

I agree, very interesting.

RE: Colleges Acquired Or Merging News - NoDak - 04-08-2018 10:38 PM

Mergers and closings have been going on for 100 years. In dUst bowl days, colleges took a major hit. The need for so many hyphenated schools that were born in the 1950’s and ‘60’s is now called into question with technology.

Some institutions are prospering. Some even failing. That’s capitalism and the marketplace. There are so many choices now, but premium and low cost, and that’s what the marketplace delivers. If a school doesn’t find a niche, it will have financial issues just like a restaurant.

I can picture a scene where Oberlin is shutting its gates for good, and its president says "well, at least we didn't compromise our standards."

I think it is possible Oberlin has an expiration date. This issue certainly exposes a more grave reality. The ironic thing is, schools of that pedigree call themselves "competitive" rather than "selective," but to compete, you have to go out there and actually do something. Oberlin is just sitting on its name and thinking it's enough for people to go nuts and come running, darn the cost. Those numbers infer an institution that hasn't been aggressive with its admissions and enrollment, but, probably more troubling...it doesn't give good aid packages to its students. Picky about who can get in there, but not helpful with those who make the cut. If you're not in the Ivy or one of its sister schools (and even a few of those have died), and you pull that kind of stuff...good luck with that. Heck, around here, the mighty Swarthmore has had its own similar issues. And for small schools, it doesn't take a whole lot to cause that kind of problem. Then again, when you ratio admits on applications just to look prestigious...

To the cost issue, the new dimension to whether an undergraduate degree is worth it is now whether the school places you in a job...that helps pay off the debt and pay for future education. Whether the school has the right professional relationships to place you with a good, competitive company. If you don't have those relationships, and I think A LOT of schools don't, public and private...your days are numbered.

RE: Colleges Acquired Or Merging News - Ohio Poly - 04-09-2018 08:34 AM

I don't believe Oberlin College will commit "high standards suicide". The decision makers will do what they have to do to preserve their jobs before it comes to that. Plus they have very large selectivity and endowment buffers to work with. How would that $770M get distributed, anyway?

There were rounds of athletic programs being dropped and schools closing their doors in the Great Depression, the early 1950's when the GI Bill students moved out of college, then a second round when the Korean War veterans finished college, another round as we ran out of boomers and the college draft deferment was repealed.
