NFL Draft Thread - cmett003 - 04-17-2018 02:54 PM

With the draft coming up I was looking at some big name G5 players and their recruiting rankings coming out of high school. I was a little surprised.

Marcus Davenport DE UTSA - 2* 0.7683 Projected - 1st Round
Willie Hernandez OG UTEP - 0* NR Projected - 1st Round
Josh Allen Wyoming QB - 3* 0.8056 Projected - 1st Round
Leighton Vander Esch Boise State ILB - 0* NR Projected - 1st Round

There are several other players from the G5 ranks that could go in the first few rounds. This gives me hope from ODUs down recruiting years. I have stated several times that we are not doing enough on the recruiting front. I do think that some players rankings are just a number and dont ever translate to their full ceiling or caliber. But the guys listed are very rare to go from a zero or two start to a first round draft pick. ODU cant afford to wait a see if some of the current 2*s magically blossom into star players. We need to get better at recruiting.

On a good note, Bunmi Rotimi got his twitter verified so thats a good step towards getting drafted!

I don't know of a school that couldn't do a better job of recruiting, but there's no magic to a 0 or 2 star getting drafted. They work their asses off getting better and, unlike basketball, they have to stay 3 years in college.

Chalk another one up for people that think BW is doing a good job at recruiting 03-puke

Sorry, 126th in the nation and 13 out of 14 in C-USA is a joke.

RE: NFL Draft Thread - jumpshooter - 04-17-2018 03:42 PM

I said nothing about the job BW's doing in recruiting; I merely answered your statement about players "magically" becoming stars.

Fair enough but there are plenty of players that work their butts off and are never considered at all for the NFL let alone to be 1st round picks. Its a combination of a lot of things that got them to this point including hard work. I stick by my original statement that going from a 0* to first round draft pick is pretty magical. Its probably among the rarest things in college football.

Haha, okay that was pretty funny

Happy draft day! Josh Allens stock is probably in a free fall right now.

RE: NFL Draft Thread - cmett003 - 04-27-2018 10:22 AM

My Lions got Frank Ragnow, C Arkansas. Was a little surprised by the pick but overall he is damn good so ill take it.

Cowgirls crapped the bed with their pick lol.

RE: NFL Draft Thread - Monarchs Win - 04-27-2018 10:31 AM

I’m a Browns fan, so everything of course went in a very Brownsy way (i.e. poorly).

I do hope we pick Hernandez from UTEP at the start of day 2 though.

Baker Mayfield is a risk. I think he is a good player but I think one of the other QBs was a safer bet.

If I was the browns I would have picks Barkley #1 and Rosen #4.

Browns always gonna Brown.

Does it matter? It's the Browns. They could pick rookie Joe Montana and he'd tear his ACL in a drunk-driving accident three weeks later.

RE: NFL Draft Thread - ODU_NYG - 04-27-2018 11:17 AM

Love that NYG got Barkley. Haven't had a stud RB in years.

I could see them going Hernandez with their 2nd rounder. A lot of fans and media are predicting that.

Go Pack!

RE: NFL Draft Thread - Gilesfan - 04-27-2018 12:04 PM

As a Skins fan, I'm ok with Payne, but don't think it was a great pick. Im just glad the Cowboys screwed up and that the Giants took a RB number 2.

I totally disagree. Rosen is a distraction and nobody likes him, Darnold is just not very good, and his college team was better without him last year.

How did you come to this conclusion? Team went 1-2 when the backup played any significant snapes (and was pretty bad). The one win was winning by 7 over Utah State.

By watching them. They were also pretty bad with Darnold for most of the season. The dude led a pretty talented team that underachieved like crazy because they didn't have a QB they could count on.

On the other hand Mayfield, like Watson last year WAS a game changer and DID win a national championship, due largely to his work. I don't for the life of me understand why NFL people complicate the QB selection process to the point that they continually make obviously bad choices like letting Watson slide when he was the clear cut best QB in the draft.

RE: NFL Draft Thread - Gilesfan - 04-27-2018 12:54 PM

Wait, are you talking about 2017 when they were 11-3 and 12th in the final poll or 2016 when they were 10-3 and finished 3rd in the final poll?

In 2016, they went 1-2 without him and he threw for 31/9 on 67% passing as a freshman

or in 2017 when his backup threw 9 total passes and he went 26/13 on 63% passing.

Because neither of your comments make a lick of sense. Neither does saying Mayfield won a national title.
