Cam Henderson Center Upgrade - HerdZoned - 05-02-2018 04:53 PM

Mike Hamrick announced on twitter a few hours ago that the Cam Henderson Center will be getting its 1st Center Video Board. It will be in place for this upcoming season of 2018-19.

Quote:HUNTINGTON, W.Va. Marshall Athletics and IMG College today announced the installation of a $1 million state-of-the-art, Daktronics center hung videoboard and basket stanchion displays in the Cam Henderson Center for the 2018-19 basketball season.

Story From WSAZ

There has never been a video board in the Cam before because the older models were to heavy and the way the Cam was built it couldn't support the weight of them. The new generation of boards are a lot lighter.

It will be a Daktronics board in conjunction with IMG Sports.

The center video board arrived a few days ago. And has been assembled. It now awaits to be lifted in place.

The board is the same dimensions as ODUs video board. With the graphics and picture quality upgraded. The Cam has never had a center hung video boad as the old ones were to heavy to support them.

The Cam had a center hung scoreboard from its opening in 1981 until Bob Marcum took over as AD. Ok not exactly then but sometime around 2004, when we went to the coffee colored floor inside the arc with giant basketball for the keys.

Man that was ugly.

But anyway, we had a centerhang until then. It was no more than four small electronic scoreboards mounted in the center. Marshall and the opponent name was put in with letters such as you see in the now older letterboard signs alongside the road.

Yes it once had a center scoreboard but that was it. And by the time the board was taken down it was old and tired looking. But it has never had a video board. The older models weighed like 3000-3500 pounds and the Henderson Center couldn't take that much weight. The new Dactronics which is what this one is weigh anywhere from 700-1300 pounds.

BTW The Henderson Center opened in 1981, not 1983.

Good catch. Will correct that.

It’s amazing how much different the same space looks nowadays.

Naaa if it was 1995 Charlotte would be going to the NCAA with a 19-8 record and Billy "The Kid" Donnovan would be coaching at Marshall.

Congratulations, but I thought every C-USA program already had video cubes at center court?

MT has two large video boards at the baseboards and four in the tunnels.

The weight of the older boards made it impossible to have a video board. The Cam wasn't built correctly anyway when it was built. It along with Mountaineer Field was built almost at the same time. The state at the time help pay for both, 2 months into Mountaineer Field build the state took 3.5 million dollars allocated for the Henderson Center and sent it up north and the original contractors then walked off the job when they learned of this. The Cam was suppose to be ready for the 1980 season but didn't open until 1981. The price tag was suppose to be 12.2 million when finished it was done at 8.7 million. Cutting 3.5 million made for some corner cutting. The reinforced roof was part of that.

If I wasn't so loyal to WKU might just be a Marshall fan.

NOW--go out and kick some non-conference butt!!

RE: Cam Henderson Center Upgrade - THUNDERStruck73 - 08-29-2018 05:58 PM

I'll tell you this; I watched Marshall play in Veterans' Memorial Field House AND played high school ball in that facility. When they first built the Henderson Center, it made me nauseated (physically) due to the way the walls were constructed. It was a cool venue, but as HerdZoned alluded earlier, it was a soup sandwich.

Slowly but surely, Marshall has been making the necessary upgrades to make it a very nice arena, so I am really pleased with how things are going for us on the hoops front.

P.S. The City of Huntington Should have just built ONE arena instead of the Henderson Center AND the Big Sandy Superstore Arena. They could have built the BSSSA and built a baseball stadium where the Cam is.

Yes the city of Huntington should have went for the proposal of the Marshall president and AD in 1976 that the city and Marshall each go half on an 11,000 seat venue where the Huntington Civic Center later renamed The Big Sandy Arena sits today. The city leaders completely shut that idea down and the city ended up with sub par 7,500 seat civic center and Marshall ended up with a 10,040 seat Henderson Center. Seating was lowered to 9,050 in the early 90s.

But these are the same leaders that rejected the "Huntington Mall" in 1974. Instead it goes to Barboursville and the rest is history.
