Rice Baseball vs. SHSU - waltgreenberg - 05-08-2018 08:01 PM

Rice leads 3-1 thanks to Evan Kravetz and little else. Offense continues to be offensive, with just 3 hits through 6 innings against a guy coming in with an ERA over 4.00 and BAA over .320. Our 3 runs came in the first inning thanks to a Chandler double, 3 walks, an error and a sac fly. We left the bases loaded. What else is new? Proctor's min-slump enters it's 5th game. He's 0-3 with 2 Ks, and his AVG is now .365 and falling. (It was just under .390 after the Charlotte weekend.) Oh, SHSU's lone run is unearned, thanks to a throwing error by Collins.

And Esquivel replaces Evan heading into the bottom of the 6th inning. Evan's line: 5.0 IP, 1 hit, 1 unearned run, 1 BB, 4Ks, 63 pitches...and he retired the final 13 batters he faced. It begs the question why he was taken out. Again, he threw only 63 pitches over 5 innings. Talk about efficiency.

Having said all that, these midweek games mean absolutely nothing from here on out given all that matters is getting into the CUSA tourney.

1 out walk, double, single in B7 ties it up at 3.

Gayle comes in to get 2 Ks to keep it tied at 3.

Some wildness by Sam's relievers in the 9th have given the Owls a 5-3 lead.

We have 5 hits through 9 innings....5 runs, but only two RBIs (sac fly by Collins, bases loaded walk to DiCaprio)...SHSU has gifted us pretty much all of our runs via 6 walks, an error, 2 wild pitches and a passed ball.

Yep. HBP, single, BB, PB, WP scores 2.

Quite the offense explision, but the Owls will take the generosity.

Owls win 5-3. Jefferies closes it out. Helps the RPI a bit - if that means anything.

Kravetz should be considered for the Sunday start now?

Nice 5-3 road win against a quality SHSU squad, but the offense better get their act together after two consecutive listless performances. Kravetz and Gayle the stars of tonight's game.

Not after throwing 63 pitches. I'm guessing Wayne took him out so that he'd have him available on Saturday or Sunday against a tough left-handed batter. Garcia should be back at the Sunday starter spot. He pitched very well the final 4 innings on Sunday. If only he had started instead of coming in for mop up.

Walt, Sunday is 5 days from now. Why would 63 pitches be too many? I totally disagree.

I don’t remember our regional seed last year but I think we were a 3. The RPI boost might help us get a 3 seed if we are able to finish strong and win the tourney.

BTW, prior to last night's game, the SHSU AD presented The OG with a statuette and plaque thanking him for being an ambassador for college baseball. He received a standing ovation from the SHSU crowd.

Sadly, at this point, nothing has been planned (or at least not announced) to honor Wayne at this weekend's final home games of the season.

AD and Sales are probably too busy with "Mark in the Park" promo

SHSU AD is, of course, Bobby Williams, Jr....the former (great) Rice receiver who scored the first touchdown in the memorable Rice-UH game in 1980 (a 35-7 Rice victory)...not to be confused with Bobby Williams, his father, who was also a Rice receiver and defensive back and a former Rice assistant football coach.

\Was that the one where we were 19 point underdogs?

Absolutely...I actually had Rice +20...very nice result.

That is disappointing to hear...hopefully that changes.

Beat the spread by 47.

RE: Rice Baseball vs. SHSU - Houston Owl - 05-09-2018 11:02 AM

Not to hijack the thread, but that 1980 team was a really good football team even though the record was 4-4 in SWC and 5-6 overall.

After two road losses at Clemson and Tulane, they defeated LSU at home, lost a great game in Austin, beat TCU at home and then defeated Texas A&M, Arkansas and UH on the road.

Maybe Wayne asked them not to? He's not exactky leaving on the best of terms.

Still sad that his last game coaching at Reckling is a regular season game with little or no fanfare.
