U of M - NOWHERE TO BE FOUND!

I am disgusted with this dirty old rag of a newspaper. I will be subscribing to a new daily when and if it appears.

I have no dog in this fight, but--let's be fair--the U of M basketball has received very nice coverage from the CA since the hiring of Penny.

I agree. But that does not mitigate the growth of reporting on things most residents of Memphis do not care about that emanate from Nashville and Eastern parts of the state. The lack of ANYTHING on Memphis Tiger Sports on a weekend is poor journalism and editing.

In all honesty, the most traffic the CA has gotten on anything has been on Penny has Tigers coach articles and if you think they wouldn’t put a Penny story in the paper if they had a Penny story, think I don’t think you understand how this works.

Tiger football and men’s basketball are areas the CA will continue to put resources while cutting everything else.

Since the hiring of Penny? The CA gives top coverage to Memphis basketball forever, and has done very good job with football too. It is the number one media outlet for Tiger sports. Even with the piss poor job that USA Today has done. I do see though that the newspaper, in general, is declining in all areas of local coverage. Maybe now that USA Today closed the Nashville design and editing studio, and is moving it to Iowa...well I guess we will get a Midwest slant now. lol.

This is really no different than how it was pre-Gannett. Those teams got covered by the CA.

What will be lacking is a 2nd or third story about Tiger game day.

Yes, they did get covered, just not as much in depth and front page coverage as they get now. Major coverage of Predators during their playoff run, major in depth coverage (as much as Grizz) on Titans draft picks (mostly front page), still giving major in depth coverage of UTK spring football and other UTK sports news (mostly front page), their spring football has been over for weeks. Sickening. And yes, agreed, the 2nd and 3rd story about Tiger games will be lacking. Again, sickening.

RE: May 19, 2018 - A harbinger of Future CA Sports? - bbqtiger - 05-20-2018 08:45 AM

The point of my post is that the CA is no longer the newspaper I have known for almost 70 years. The local coverage now includes an enormous amount of material regarding things from East and Middle Tennessee. It is not that the Memphis and West Tennessee, N. Mississippi, and E. Arkansas are getting any less (which they may well be) but the growth in material about the other areas much less interesting to local readers. Look at the Sunday CA Sports page. Which article on Page 1 has the most actual column inches? The article on Phil Fulmer's contract and its buyout terms. It is a total of approximately 2/3 of a page, perhaps 3/4.

The Page one article with the headline on Penny is actually about 5 column inches. It is the lead into the local high school weekly column, not a U of M article. As you peruse the balance of the sports section, it is filled with what I believe to be written by USA Today staff, NOTHING actually local. (Which is not totally surprising.)

Now, if folks like reading about UT-K, Preds, Titans, fish caught in East Tn., well, good for you. As for me, as soon as there is a local option, I am gone.

Due to countless social media and online news choices, the days of local newspapers having the monopoly on reporting news is history.

It's up to the individual (I'm 56 and counting) to peruse the many sources and put together a piecemeal approach to finding out what's going on. Between localized Google News, Memphis Daily News, numerous Facebook groups, Memphis Flyer, Twitter, Commercial Appeal, local TV station websites, etc., it is still possible to know what's going on both locally and in the world.

I've employed this multiple-source strategy for years and don't miss the analog-only days of the CA, Press Scimiter and TV news as the only sources for information.

I am not sure humans made the choice.

Hey, G'TownTiger, I, too, have become accustomed to using the many outlets/sites to get my information. That really is not the issue to me. As the title of the thread implies, I am concerned only about the content of the sports news being distributed by our own local Nashville CA.

Just my humble opinions expressed here.

RE: May 19, 2018 - A harbinger of Future CA Sports? - Mimi - 05-20-2018 10:32 AM

A new model for newspapers is to raise prices and offer less content, taking advantage of older folks primarily, and those people who cannot imagine life without a paper being delivered.

Some papers can still make money that way, although it is not good for long term survival.

There will be a point of no return. Too much for too little. The CA is approaching that.

This style was well documented, although for the life of me, I cannot remember where I read it.

Some papers are still high quality, even local papers, beyond the national angles like the NYTimes and Washington Post...keep the nonsense in check please. The Tampa Bay Times is surprisingly high quality, Dallas news too.

Agree with Dallas and would add Atlanta's AJC as well

If the paper was truly a Memphis focused paper the sports department should focus on these items in order.

Memphis Tigers
Memphis pro teams
Major sports events(National College and Pro events)
AAC Sports
Other Memphis College teams
Other Memphis college Conference Sports
Memphis High School
Other Memphis metro area sports
.
.
.
.
Regional college conference sports

If people choose to follow college teams from outside Memphis that is their choice and it is not the responsibility of the local paper to cover their team.

I agree with you that the local sports coverage is terrible...high school sports in particular are impossible to follow at the CA.

It wasn't a huge article but the CA used to have the Monday night Coliseum wrestling results in the Tuesday sports section back in the day.
