Texas/TAMU rivalry potentially coming back? - Gamecock - 05-31-2018 10:03 AM

Looks like the Texas AD is on board with the idea now, as are the head coaches at both schools.

It should happen. I grew up on SWC football. In fact, all I knew as a kid growing up was SWC football. I'll admit to being fairly ignorant of most of the rest of college football beyond Mich-Mich St, Ohio St-Mich, and maybe USC-UCLA. Texas vs Texas A&M, back then, was probably the biggest SWC rivalry---primarily due to its unique Thanksgiving Day date and the ingrained dislike the two fan bases had for one another. Fans looked forward to it every year. We will never have SWC football back, but there is really no reason Texas vs Texas A&M cant be played annually. I hope hey can revive at least that little slice of SWC soon. Its long overdue.

Good that cooler heads are prevailing here. This rivalry should be played annually.

Need to get Missouri-Kansas back as well.

They must have finally realized how much money they are letting slip away due to pettiness

Nice, good to see a rivalry continued after a conference change.

Isn't going to happen....

Everyone with the power to bring back the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry will tell you (on the record, at least) that they want to bring the game back. But none of them seem to be in a big hurry to actually bring the game back.

That became apparent earlier this month when Texas announced a home-and-home series with Alabama for the 2022-23 seasons. That bit of news leaves the Longhorns scheduled out with the likes of USC, LSU, Arkansas, Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan through the 2027 season, meaning the series’s renewal will either have to wait until 2028 or the earliest, or the Longhorns will play a major non-conference opponent in September, a 9-game Big 12 schedule and Texas A&M as the lead in to a possible appearance in the Big 12 Championship and the College Football Playoff. Which isn’t happening.

It’ll be a few years based on how far UT is scheduled out with teams like USC, Bama, Ohio St, LSU, Michigan, and Arkansas.

Not for another decade. Aggies need time to grow up and quit being so immature about the rivalry.

This won't happen anytime soon except in a bowl.

The two games would work well together. The SEC could then match LSU and Arkansas again on Thanksgiving weekend.

This speculation happens every off season

1) There isn't even room for it on UT's schedule for a decade

2) As was pointed out, the officials say what they have to in public but know that the Big Money Cigars on both sides are ready to fire whichever AD "caves" first. Call it stubbornness but it's the truth. The only way it's coming back is if the Legislature passes a law and there's enough high ranking alums on both sides to scuttle any attempt.

Remember: Bama and Auburn didn't play each other for 40 years because of bad blood.

Not saying it'll be that long but it'll probably be another 10 years or so. But there's always the chance of a bowl game.

And people ask why I don't personally miss it one bit.

The bad blood just seems insane to me. South Carolina/Clemson is as heated as it gets and I couldn't fathom a scenario that would lead to us putting the annual matchup on hold.

RE: Texas/TAMU rivalry potentially coming back? - Bobcat2013 - 05-31-2018 06:00 PM

Keep it on ice. I'd rather just focus on the Cowboys on Thanksgiving.

RE: Texas/TAMU rivalry potentially coming back? - IWokeUpLikeThis - 05-31-2018 06:50 PM

TCU has really capitalized on the disintegration of this rivalry. Neither Texas nor A&M is the class of Texas anymore.

RE: Texas/TAMU rivalry potentially coming back? - bluesox - 05-31-2018 07:38 PM

First step should be to get basketball and baseball games going which could happen next season. Step 2 is football series when the schedule is open for both schools

RE: Texas/TAMU rivalry potentially coming back? - ohio1317 - 06-01-2018 10:55 AM

I would almost guarantee it won't be annual, but glad to see it coming back. Reason it is very unlikely to be annual is going to be from the Texas end. In conference they have 4 home games, 4 road games, and a neutral site game. I guessing they are like most the other big programs and want to average 7 home games a year. If you count the neutral site game (vs. Oklahoma) as half a home game, that means one home and home at a time out of conference. Putting Texas A&M in that spot some of the time is good, but they won't want it for that spot every year.

Now if they are willing to have fewer home games, that opens things up more.

Except for next Texas has an SEC West school on their schedule every year through 2023. Scheduling SEC schools now opens up OOC games if the Longhorns join the SEC.

RE: Texas/TAMU rivalry potentially coming back? - JHS55 - 06-01-2018 03:43 PM

I can’t see this game ever taking place, just like Texas will NEVER join the sec because A&M is already there
A&M fans I know seem like they are living is some other place, the odds of this old rivalry ever taking place again are Zero...!
The short road between Austin and college station is less traveled because it’s frozen over
