Who do you want to play - Ewglenn - 05-31-2018 02:39 PM

In a Group of Five H&H who do you want to see on the schedule the most? For me I would love to get App St and/or ECU. They are teams close by with strong followings.i would be pumped to get either on the schedule. Those games would likely sellout.. What about you?

I wouldn’t mind those teams and some from the AAC in later seasons(3-5 years from now).

1) Navy
2) UCF/USF
3) Boise St.
4) Houston
5) ODU

I’m in South Dakota so I’m hoping for a date with Nebraska or Minnesota. There aren’t a lot of G5 teams near by lol.

RE: Who do you want to play - GE and MTS - 06-01-2018 04:44 PM

I am not too thrilled with home/home arrangements with G5 schools. If we want to be a P5 school, we need to act like one and do two home, one away or buy games. Now I completely understand that we are the new kids on the block and need some time to earn prestige but P5 realignment may be just around the corner and we need to position ourselves as best as possible.

Having said that, I am looking forward to playing UMass annually to perhaps build a rivalry. They seem to be the only consistent school we have scheduled. I don't have any affinity for UMass but I hope something develops.

The UCF and USF twins make sense as they are in a fertile recruiting territory where we have a lot of alumni. They also are usually strong competition which could help sell tickets. The same is true for Cincinnati and Houston. The American is full of solid schools that I wouldn't mind playing.

ODU is another I wouldn't mind playing annually as a cross-state rival. They appear to want another Virginia school to play and we could fit the bill and offer them exposure on the western side of the state.

BYU would be very good to play annually as we are in the same boat as them.

Army, as a fellow independent, should be easy to play against.

I left BYU off my list because they are generally considered a P5 opponent. Likewise for Army. The original request was to choose G5 schools. I also understad Navy is usually considered a P5 opponent, but they are in a G5 conference.

I was mostly targeting G5 teams not on the schedule. BYU is mostly considered P5 but Army, Navy and Air Force are not. I would love to get Navy and Air Force on the schedule but they don’t have many OOC games to give out. Navy only has two per year because ND and Air Force are always on the OOC schedule.

I think when conferences require members to play a certain number of P5 opponents in non-conference play, BYU and some others are allowed. However, BYU isn't treated like Notre Dame or how a big dog who decided to go independent would be treated. I believe Notre Dame gets a vote worth two points, just like each P5 conference, on FBS matters unlike the G5 conferences getting votes worth one point. I don't even know if BYU gets a vote.

BYU's metrics (value, attendance, budget, etc.) place them basically at the very bottom of the P5 and the top of the G5.

Well you are completely wrong about their attendance. Last year they averaged over 56k per game. That puts them about 500 per game outside of the top 30 school.

Okay, I was wrong on football attendance but the point still remains. They are classified as a G5 school.

Where do you get that? The ACC requires all of their teams to schedule at least one OOC P5 school and BYU is included in that. None of the other Indy schools, except ND, count.

BYU is not considered part of the autonomous group of schools. It is the P5 conferences and Notre Dame. They have no automatic path to a NY6 bowl. Notre Dame can get an Orange Bowl slot automatically, or any ACC bowl.

Conferences may consider them as a fill in for a P5 non-conference opponent but they don't consider them equal. They do the same with schools like Cincinnati, UCF, etc. but they are not P5 schools either. BYU is certainly not paid like a P5 school either.

What conferences do that? BYU is no ND but to lump them in with G5 is not an accurate depiction of their worth. You talked about their value, budget and attendance. All of those are more similar to P5 schools than G5 schools. They don’t have an auto path to the Playoff but ND agreed with the ACC to ensure that they did have essentially an auto birth to the CFP. Without that their situation, to my knowledge, would have been much more up in the air. Here is a good article on BYU athletics.

2) Navy - Because they are regional, are nationally respected as an institution, LU is military friendly, and there would be the opportunity to bring in a ton of Navy Personnel from VA.
3) UCF/USF - Because they are both larger, higher profile FL teams, with good reputations, winning programs, and would be good for recruiting.
4) Boise St. - Because they are still considered one of the best teams in the country.
5) Houston - Of the non-P5 Texas teams, they are easily the best, and would be great for recruiting.
6) ODU - They would make a great rival, are close, and would be great for recruiting.
