Houston chronicle sux - JHS55 - 08-09-2018 08:36 AM

This paper is anti Houston cougars, it pisses me off to no end that the sports section just about NEVER has any articles on the cougars in any sport
There are more stories per week for UT, T&M, Rice, even TCU and Baylor or boasting about how LSU Has scouts in town but almost nothing on the cougars, I can look for weeks and see nothing on the cougars and this time of year should be at least something
The bias is plain to see
I know this is nothing new, but gosh it’s worse now than ever before

We have the same problem with the Orlando Sentinel. I feel like the Tampa Bay (whatever it's called) writes more about us than our own hometown paper. Newspapers are a dying breed.

That's funny. We all hate the Cincinnati Enquirer (and WLW) for the same reason.

It seems they would rather just report the bad and not the good. But, we all know media outlets would never do that.

Small towns don't have a ton of perks, but this is one of them. ECU is on the front page of every newspaper, online magazine, tv news station, and sports/talk radio station in Greenville. The university is the focal point of the city.

The only other places that I've visited where the university was as front and center in schools, front yards, offices, and other local businesses are Madison, Wisconsin and Columbus, Ohio.

I've always imagined that places like Morgantown, Oxford, and other reeeally small towns are even more school-centric.

For better or worse, once you add a lot of other stuff to a city (particularly pro sports teams), college teams can get lost in the noise. Might be the only thing Fanhood has ever said that I agree with. The downside obviously being that alumni don't stick around as much as the bigger cities.

I see a lot of Houston stuff in the Thrifty Nickel

RE: Houston chronicle sux - JHS55 - 08-09-2018 10:31 AM

I do see more UofH stuff in our local Academy sporting stores but our local paper is a liberal peace of s**t

Subscribe to the scouting sites that actually care about your school. The DMN pays sports reporters about $125/article. You can't live on that anymore.

With all due respect--the Chronicle has a dedicated beat writer for UH who has been going to practice all week. If you think the coverage is bad now---you should have seen if 5 years ago or so. Its been much better the last few years. The beat writer (Duarte) does a pretty good job and writes most of the UH stuff---but the other sports writers will pitch in pieces as well. I noticed Jenny Creech did an article on Oliver the other day. Honestly---its getting better. 04-cheers

RE: Houston chronicle sux - JHS55 - 08-09-2018 11:28 AM

I sure missed that Oliver article?, I don’t see it getting better at all and 5 years ago I thought it was just as bad, I’ve been in the publishing business before, I know some of these writers and I know that they work for Hurst...
I know they don’t have squat to , hmmm let’s see, mybe promote the local college athletics a few days a week or more, and there is no reason what’s so ever not to and to do this kind of coverage doesn’t cost that much , it does cost more to use up ad space on a broad sheet but not so much as an excuse not to do more
And then there’s that bias... do ya have anything to say about that, because I can get started on the whole UT- Houston campus saga and how the chronicle sided with UT at every step of the way ...with all due respect

I know in Atlanta , with the AJC, there is a dollar amount that would get us covered regularly. New reality is city papers are only diverting resources or most resources to state U.

Come on man. We can all have opinions, but we purposely try and keep politics separate from sports on this message board. Let's critique news sources without just labelling political beliefs as expletives.
