Hearing rumors - IslandHerd1 - 10-23-2018 09:04 PM

About a conference reshuffle.

IF this is going to come about, here is what I would like to see:

East:

1. Appalachian State (25,787) (NC)
2. Marshall (21,741) (WV)
3. Florida Atlantic (18,948) (FL)
4. Georgia Southern (15,258* Only 4 home games, bad storms and I believe a Hurricane altered this)
5. James Madison (21,724) (VA)
6. Middle Tenn. (15,620) (TN)
7. Old Dominion (20,118) (VA)
8. Western Kentucky (15,706) (KY)

Last team out of the east: Charlotte (11,903)

West:

1. Arkansas State (23,908) (AR)
2. Louisiana Tech (20,375) (LA)
3. North Texas (22,362) (TX)
4. Rice (19,354) (TX) (Elite Baseball)
5. Southern Miss (21,711) (MS)
6. Troy (24,456) (AL)
7. UAB (26,375) (AL)
8. UTSA (22,821) (TX)

Last team out of the west: UTEP (19,548)

16 teams, some solid attendance in football for MOST schools, 7 division games, 1 crossover game.

RE: Hearing rumors - cmett003 - 10-23-2018 09:27 PM

I could get on board with that. JMU/Charlotte is a toss up. Charlotte is down right now but has a higher ceiling IMO than JMU. JMU would be a good rival for ODU which I have advocated for in the past. Also JMU has better attendance but I also think Charlotte has a good fan base that just needs more sustained success on the field and court. Either way I like taking the best teams from both conferences. Making 2 divisions but with little crossover travel. West looks good.

I'm am only going to comment on the divisions you have put up even though i dont think we should expand past 14.

I think the West division is a much stronger division Top to Bottom.

Also you left out FIU unless you think they are moving to another division.

Where are you hearing these rumors from? Within the university?

From DavidSt. That would be dumbassery on so many levels.

RE: Hearing rumors - va-eagle - 10-23-2018 09:51 PM

16 is too many. I don’t like 1 Crossover games.

I think this is the first hypothetical conference realignment that didn't cause me to throw up while reading!

If DavidSt heard it it had to come from the disability office....

I believe he's more than likely spent most of his life there trying to get on the government/tax payers/ssi payroll for one of the 100 illness he had since his mother told him a leaking ear drum as a new born is a life long disability.

Well that or the couch...never saw a person that knows as much about any and all TV shows going back 30 or 40 years as he does.

RE: Hearing rumors - THUNDERStruck73 - 10-23-2018 10:07 PM

Well, since we have gone down the rabbit hole:

North

Marshall
MTSU
WKU
App
ODU
Charlotte
stAte

South

USM
UAB
LaTech
FAU
FIU
Troy
So Alabama

RE: Hearing rumors - HerdZoned - 10-23-2018 10:10 PM

As I stated earlier if this was strictly about football Appy State and Georgia Southern would be a pick right away. But the truth is they bring nothing else to the table. Same could be said about Troy and Arkansas State. Lets take a look at their basketball numbers over the last 4 years.

Appy State
Games played 123
Won 45
Lost 78
Record from 14-18 12-17, 9-22, 9-21, 15-18
NCAA/NIT/CBI/CIT 0

Georgia Southern
Games Played 122
Won 65
Lost 57
Record from 14-18 22-9, 14-17, 18-15, 21-12
NCAA/NIT/CBI/CIT 0

Troy
Games Played 130
Won 57
Lost 73
Record from 14-18 10-18, 9-22, 22-15, 16-17
NCAA/NIT/CBI/CIT 1 2017 NCAA

Arkansas State
Games Played 123
Won 53
Lost 71
Record from 14-18 11-18, 11-20, 20-12, 11-21

As I also said earlier the only school that looks to have potential for both sports is the ULL Rajun' Cajun's. Also Appy seems to be pretty content with their coach even though he is setting at 45-78. I know after 4 years of Ron Jirsa at Marshall and almost the same record at 41-79 everyone in Huntington was ready to throw Jirsa under the bus and be willing to be the one driving the bus over him.

RE: Hearing rumors - banker - 10-23-2018 10:16 PM

This is just speculation from the Marshall boards. The rumor is that certain CUSA schools have been meeting behind the scenes with some other schools. People are tying it to the announcement of the baseball stadium, saying it was a piece we had to have in place to make things come together. I'm not buying it.

As to the OP, 16 is just too many. I would prefer to go back to 12 so you actually get to play everyone in the conference within a reasonable, recurring, timeframe. If you had only had one cross over game you would have a 14 year gap playing each team from the other side if you did home and home.

RE: Hearing rumors - USM@FTL - 10-23-2018 10:24 PM

This should be on a different board.

6 teams is the perfect size for a division. We need more than 2 divisions to handle more than 14 teams. Get a waiver to allow a 4-team playoff for conferences with over 14 members. THEN, attack the Sunbelt.

Love this make believe conference. Not only because it offers good football on both sides . The basketball isn't bad. The only down side is traveling to freaking Jonesboro Ark. but other than that....

2 schools with in easy drives to the Gulf (white sand beaches), 2 schools in S. Fla, 3 schools right next to the Atlantic. Hell make that 3 schools with in easy drives to the Gulf...S. Miss isn't that far away.

As far as traveling this would be my dream conference...well other than freaking Jonesboro Ark

9 would be ideal. Top 2 play a ccg (full round robin).

Marshall
MTSU
WKU
UAB
USM
ODU
FAU

If you wanted to compress it to geography:

ODU
Marshall
WKU
Charlotte
MTSU
App
UAB
GaSt
Coastal

Idk. I think we all know a reshuffling is coming. Hopefully the powers that be will have better hallway vision.

RE: Hearing rumors - PirateTreasureNC - 10-23-2018 10:36 PM

What financial benefit would CUSA get out of even entertaining going to 16?

That was my line of thinking. Good fb and bb. And not bad baseball. Divisionally compact (except Jonesboro). But big cahuna is luring tv dollars to the conference. This kind of alignment might do it. Plus, it would
Free up the other LA and TX schools to align themselves more economically. If we had to go to 16, then add Coastal, GaSt, or GaSo...

RE: Hearing rumors - USM@FTL - 10-23-2018 10:49 PM

Don't max your divisions yet. You could be taking FROM the AAC once the Big12 does its thing.

But seriously, petition the NCAA for conferences bigger than 14 to have a 4-team playoff.

Well it won't be called CUSA. And we could use the money the teams would be paying to get out of the conference to build a larger stadium for ourself. I dare the teams to leave.

RE: Hearing rumors - USM@FTL - 10-23-2018 11:24 PM

You can't practically kick someone out of a conference. Temple is an exception. And that took forever. It's poison politics. It's much easier to expand.

2 9-team divisions is about as big as you can get, but 3 6-teams divisions would be much more fun. 3 division winners and a wildcard.

If we added Appa State, Georgia Southern, Arkansas State, and ULaLa, which in my opinion would strengthen the heck out of us, you could split the 4 up, OR you could do this:

WKU, MTSU, Charlotte, ODU, Marshall, Appa State
USM, La Tech, UAB, Georgia Southern, FIU, FAU
Rice, UTEP, UNT, UTSA, Arkansas State, ULaLa

I like those divisions for football. You could have one permanent rival then rotate everyone else.
