The conference approached Dixie State in St. George, Utah about joining and in response the school recently completed a feasibility study of moving up to D-1. The study's findings include the following:
Dixie State should only consider an invitation from the WAC if the conference is actively exploring adding a sponsorship of football as part of its membership portfolio. The WAC has confirmed to Collegiate Consulting it is initiating a study in the Fall 2018 to explore the options and opportunities of starting a FCS football conference.

Of course the obstacle to resurrecting WAC football would be rounding up six schools willing to put their football programs in a new FCS conference. Potential D-2 move-ups like Dixie State and Tarleton State, along with UTRGV which is considering starting football, could get the WAC part of the way there. But presumably at least two or three current FCS programs would need to sign on as affiliates.

What I'm wondering is can the WAC be a direct path to being FBS. Since they were a FBS conference they can bring back FBS football till the NCAA changes the rules, is that correct?

Not anymore. They had their grace period to do so and that time has passed.
FCS is always a possibility and will access to the playoffs.

This is great news for us that want another FCS conference in the west. Definitely opens a whole lot of possibilities for the WAC. I could see S. Utah joining and possibly NAU. It opens up Azusa Pacific as a viable option.

I can see why the WAC would want to start up FCS football, as they're desperate for members and even ambitious DII schools with football won't jump to DI without a football home. However, I don't see why current schools in the Big Sky, one of the best FCS football conferences, would leave for a WAC full of recent DII callups.

That would be the key for NAU, SUU to join. Add in a more regional travel for sports. It could work.

If the WAC became a regional football league in the Southwest, they would definitely need to poach some geographic outliers from the Big Sky to use as a base. The problem is that NAU and SUU most likely wouldn't want to join a league primarily comprised of D2 callups. If either wanted to move, basketball would likely be a contributing factor. Northern Colorado seems like they would be more eager to sign off on WAC football. They aren't good at football, so joining an upstart league wouldn't be as big of an issue, plus they would also get the added benefit of WAC hoops.

I would expect the schools that at WAC affiliates for baseball could become full members if the WAC does go FCS.. UNC/SacSt. Possibly even soccer affiliate members HBU and IUW as full WAC members if FCS comes alive.

SUU wouldn’t have a problem as they are not far from D2 themselves. NAU I could see but they would probably join since it would be an upgrade in basketball with GCU, NMSU and Cal Baptist.

The WAC is in a dire situation and needs to have potential new members available, and they want to entice prospective D-II programs, like Dixie State, by just saying to prospective members that the WAC is looking into the possibility of someday sponsoring FCS football. It's difficult to see how they could actually get enough football playing schools to actually do it. Are they going to bring in six or more football playing schools moving up from D-II? Very unlikely that they could get that many. Best they could hope for is to bring in 2 or 3 and add 3 or 4 existing FCS programs (maybe from the Big Sky) that are consistently getting crushed in football and are seriously looking for a less competitive league.

Gotta think they could muster up 2-4 fcs schools to hop over though all you have to do is look at the Southland and Big Sky both have schools that cant hang currently that would be open to joining WAC FCS.

Interesting, I could see some of this happening, SUU, UNC and possibly NAU I could see leaving the BSC with a more manageable number while dropping a couple bottom feeders. Pick up a couple D2 schools like Dixie and Tarleton and bingo you have an FCS league. Too bad No Dak left as hevwould certainly add to this.

What if olympic sports go to the Big West?
I know our Gaucho wants to expand the Big West footprint into AZ. And NAU is a closer institutional fit than GCU. Like Cal Poly & Davis, NAU would be affiliate, football-only members of the Big Sky. Their branding would still be Big West. So moving football to the WAC isn't such a big deal.
Not predicting this will happen. It probably won't. I'm just curious about what an NAU fan thinks about the hypothetical.

The WAC basketball has improved to 14 in league RPI where the Big Sky was 19 and the Big West was 22 last year.
I know the NAU/GCU mens basketball programs aren't very friendly and apparently NAU keeps dodging GCU's talks about a yearly game.
