OT: Iowa radio announcer suspended - usm99 - 11-29-2018 10:24 AM

I can only imagine some of the comments that radio broadcasters make during games "off the air" but you might want to make sure you are really off the air.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/bigten/2018/11/28/iowa-hawkeyes-broadcaster-suspended-ripping-basketball-team-air/2146717002/

Longtime Iowa radio broadcaster Gary Dolphin has been suspended from calling the team's next two men's basketball contests after critical comments that were inadvertently aired during Tuesday's Hawkeye win over Pitt.

In a news release Wednesday, Barta said: “Gary knows we are extremely disappointed in the comment he made about Maishe Dailey and the impact his remark had on our players and staff. The two-game suspension is a result of those comments, as well as some ongoing tensions that have built up over the past couple of years. This time away from the microphone will allow a chance to work through some of these issues. I truly appreciate the time and energy Gary puts into promoting Hawkeye athletics."

“We unfortunately encountered a technical error at our network broadcast operations center that allowed off-air comments to be aired during a portion of the first-half commercial break,” Learfield Vice President-Broadcast Operations Tom Boman said in the news release. “We thoroughly reviewed the situation here at our Broadcast Ops center to ensure this doesn’t happen again, and we’ve also been communicating closely with Gary Barta and his administration, the entire broadcast team and our local Hawkeye Sports Properties staff.”

Funny on a couple levels:

>His last name is Dolphin but ironically lives in Iowa

>“We get Maishe Dailey," Dolphin said in a tone of disgust. "Dribbles into a double-team with his head down. God.”

Pretty benign comments in my opinion. A big fuss over nothing.

RE: OT: Iowa radio announcer suspended - mturn017 - 11-29-2018 10:36 AM

I remember when CUSATV first came online they offered a free trial week or something and I checked it out. The only game on was like a Marshall soccer game, maybe women's soccer. Whoever was operating the camera didn't realize that there was audio on as well apparently and you could overhear his conversation and the guy starts bad mouthing his boss. It lasted probably a minute and a half before the audio went out altogether.

Much ado over absolutely nothing. Toughen up, Iowa.

Wait, that's it?

Man, I'd hate to see the punishment if something bad was actually said.

Here's the full conversation:

>Dolphin was talking with his broadcast partner, former Hawkeye player Bobby Hansen, about how well Pitt's freshmen guards were playing in the first half.

“How do we not get anybody like that?” Dolphin said. “It's just year after year after year. Go get a quality piece like that. Just get one! They've got three or four.”

Hansen, who was not suspended, seemed to agree with Dolphin, echoing: "Go get a key piece like that."

But Dolphin compounded matters by singling out Iowa junior guard Maishe Dailey. Dailey had four points and one turnover Tuesday.

“We get Maishe Dailey," Dolphin said in a tone of disgust. "Dribbles into a double-team with his head down. God.”

as well, this was also in article: The two-game suspension is a result of those comments, as well as some ongoing tensions that have built up over the past couple of years.

I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the punishment, just thought it was entertaining chain of events

Who remembers the USM spring game of 09 or 10 when instead of airing USM voice John Cox they were airing the A/V guys in a back booth with a hot mic. Everything was aired from talking about banging Michelle Obama to banging a picnic table. I've actually got the entire recording on my old laptop. It's terrible and hilarious at the same time.

RE: OT: Iowa radio announcer suspended - nastybunch - 11-29-2018 02:16 PM

I remember that..TTT. I have personally seen a couple of hilarious happenings over the years in games. Several years ago while watching a MAIS State Championship baseball game, I saw a PA announcer get tossed from the game after the home team got what he thought was a bad call at home on a bang-bang Play. He played “Three Blind Mice” over the sound system. Also, this year I saw a chain gang worker get tossed from the game after letting the ref have it after what he thought was a bad call near him....

I do remember something about that now that you mention it.01-ncaabbs here's the news article about it:

http://www.wdam.com/story/10214041/radio-station-apologizes-to-usm-for-accidental-broadcast/
April 20, 2009 at 3:37 PM CDT - Updated June 15 at 11:40 PM
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Laurel radio station has apologized to The University of Southern Mississippi for the accidental broadcast of a private conversation by its employees over the Internet.

During the Saturday broadcast of the Golden Eagles' spring football game, several employees discussed sexual topics, and the audio was unknowingly broadcasted.

Blakeney Communications Inc., the parent company of radio stations Rock 104, KZ 94.3 and 96.5 The Hub, issued the apology Sunday to the university and its football fans.

The conversation of several employees of WXRR-104.5 FM was picked up by a live microphone and broadcast via the Internet to fans who subscribed via the Southern Miss All-Access feed.

In its apology, Blakeney Communications executives wrote, "The employees deeply regret any offensive remarks which may have been made and wish to apologize to Southern Miss fans."

The entire statement from Blakeney Communications can be viewed online at: http://southernmiss.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/041909aab.html.

"We appreciate that Blakeney Communications takes full responsibility for this unfortunate incident," said USM President Martha Saunders. "We regret that some of our fans who heard the broadcast were exposed to reprehensible language, and we trust that the company will take the steps necessary to make sure this doesn't happen again."

Marshall had an injured player down during an ESPN broadcast. It was a woman calling the game, can't remember who, but they went to a commercial break, they thought, and you hear here say "come on, just drag him off the field already". Turns out it was a fairly serious injury.

Marshall AD is like the gestapo. Anything close to a negative comment or similar via a call in show, etc will get you booted or banned. It’s hilarious. People need to have thicker skins.

Reminds me of the extreme tirade a Michigan State color guy had on air after Sparty lost to ND in football several years ago in football on a last minute bonehaed play. It was a classic.

And not surprisingly USM fans can relate to this as well thanks to eLLLLLLLLLLLLos Johnson. During his one season here the call in show had to change from questions being aired live to questions had to be submitted prior. My favorite was a call from a person identifying as an ECU fan says "hey coach, why don't you do USM fans a favor and resign already. You are embarrassing them". Then the line goes silent and our radio guy (John Cox) makes some excuse about technical difficulties as the reason the caller wasn't on the air for the rest of his question. But before that night there were questions that weren't as blunt but you could tell it was building up to that.

It was Pam Ward in the Little Caesar's Bowl against Ohio in 2009. And it was true freshman Vinny Curry that was down.

I remember that happening, but I’m not sure it was the ECU fan. The ECU fan said something like “I just wanted to say I think you’re doing a great job coach, and as an ECU fan, I just want to thank you for the free win we’ll get every year.”

Actually, I disagree. She seemed to have a lot of respect for him up until the end, when she said “C’mon”
