Bowl game shuffle: SEC/Big Ten vs. Pac in Vegas, new bowl in LA, ACC in Holiday - Wedge - 03-05-2019 03:23 PM

... according to McMustache.

https://watchstadium.com/news/college-football-bowl-game-changes-to-begin-in-2020-03-05-2019/
Quote:Beginning in 2020, the Las Vegas Bowl will annually feature a team from the Pac-12 against a team from the SEC or Big Ten, and a new bowl in Los Angeles will feature the Pac-12 against the Mountain West, sources told Stadium.

Other changes: The ACC will add the Holiday Bowl, the SEC and Big Ten will rotate between the Las Vegas and the Belk bowls, and the Outback Bowl will feature an ACC team if a Big Ten team is in the Orange Bowl, sources said.

Also a new bowl in Myrtle Beach, and matchup changes for Gator, Music City, and Arizona bowls.

Music City and Gator swapping opponents for SEC makes sense. Music City getting Big Ten and Gator getting ACC.

Pretty big change for Citrus/Outback Bowl.

So the new LA Bowl will be the MW champ if they are not in the Access Bowl.
Two big questions remain: Will this be the worst team the PAC has or will it be at least a #5 or better PAC team? And...will this bowl be played after Christmas?

AZ bowl becoming a MW vs MAC matchup. Wonder if the MAC is giving up the Potato for the AZ bowl? I certainly would!

Honestly the AZ Bowl should be rotated between CUSA West and SBC West teams to play the MWC.

My guess is vegas would get higher pick over new LA bowl

there is no doubt that Vegas will get the higher pick.

my hunch is that it'll be-
1- Rose
2- Alamo vs Big 12
3- Las Vegas vs SEC
4- Holiday vs ACC
5- Red Box vs Big Ten
6- LA vs MWC
7- Sun vs ACC?

maybe LA ahead of Red Box.

I was thinking to myself the other day what does FBS brand football need to make it better. Of course! More bowls...

what a hot take

Brett McMurphy stated that the Las Vegas Bowl will get the #3 or 4 PAC 12 selection. Redbox and Sun Bowl have payouts ahead of the old Las Vegas Bowl. LA would have to payout more than $2.2M to bump ahead of either the Redbox or Sun bowls. Here's where I think it lands:

1- Rose
2- Alamo v. Big 12
3- Las Vegas v. SEC/B1G
4- Holiday v. ACC
5- Red Box v. B1G
6- Sun v. ACC
7- LA v. MWC
8- Cheez-It v. B12

An LA bowl in a new stadium vs the Pac12 is a pretty darn good replacement for Vegas. 04-cheers

Yeah, I just realized that. So instead of having the bowl in the new Raiders stadium, we’ll have it in the new Chargers/Rams stadium.
I really hope though that we do get a better pick against the PAC. It really needs to be #5 or better.

It looks like the Las Vegas Bowl was really the catalyst for these changes, but kudos to the conferences for coming up with some very logical changes (well, except for the ACC playing in the Holiday Bowl, but at least it's not a bad destination).

I wish the Big Ten would have kept the Holiday Bowl and given up the Red Box.

may very well not have been given the choice- or be willing to meet the required place in the pecking order....

Great to see a PAC vs SEC matchup, and in PAC territory.

I still think Vegas Bowl needs the MWC better than another P5 school. It is a better Bowl game between the 2 western conferences which MWC comes out on top a lot of times. This is actually stabbing G5 schools in the back. MWC schools can compete against the P5 better.

Probably because the San Diego football stadium is likely to be torn down and replaced by a college football stadium that may seat up to 20,000 people less. So switching that out for a spot in the new Vegas stadium bowl may be a very good move. San Diego has its positives but Vegas has a pizzazz in its favor.

I have thought that the Santa Clara bowl would be ending but probably not. With that said, I would have preferred the Alamo Bowl or even the second L.A. bowl to that. The MWC fans should count their blessings that they're getting a lifeline to that new L.A. bowl and not immediately complain about possible match-ups.

Uhm, it looks like trying to find a pairing that at least would scratch in ratings was the catalyst. This is network self interest at work Mark. It will benefit the bigger schools some, but it is designed to benefit the ratings with a small nod to potential travel crowds for the locales.

Just from the ACC TV perspective. The Holiday is owned by Fox and if the ACC keeps the Sun. That is on CBS. Think it helps with more options for Post Christmas TV time slots. It looks ACC should have a presence in Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville and Tampa for the top teams. Looks like Tier 1 and Mid Tier are likely settled. Just seeing what the Lower Tier Bowls and opponents end up being.

Boise State to the Vegas Bowl draws crowds and ratings better than other MWC. PAC 12 teams have a better chance at winning against MWC than they would with a SEC team.
