CAA Tournament “If It Ended Today”
Figured I’d do something to update what the pairings could be in the conference tourney “if the season ended today.”
We’re 4 games in for everybody, so I figured it’d be a good point to do this.
Here we go.
Saturday
#9 UNCW vs #8 Drexel
#10 JMU vs. #7 Towson
Sunday
Drexel/UNCW vs. #1 W&M
#5 Charleston vs. #4 Hofstra
JMU/Towson vs. #2 Elon
#6 Delaware vs. #3 Northeastern

Biggest surprise so far is W&M. Biggest disappointment is Towson. Everyone else seems to be where you'd expect them to be.

Here are each team's CAA standings rank (using RPI as the tiebreaker because of teams who haven't played each other) and Preseason Poll rank:
William & Mary: 1, 8
Hofstra: 2, 4
Elon: 3, 3
Northeastern: 4, 6
College of Charleston: 5, 1
Delaware: 6, 7
Towson: 7, 2
UNC Wilmington: 8, 5
Drexel: 9, 9
James Madison: 10, 10

Why are you ranking Towson ahead of C of C? They're both 3-3. They split head-to-head. Record against William & Mary can't be used because C of C hasn't played them. Then C of C wins the tiebreaker over Towson in the combined record against the 4-2 teams.

Clearly, it doesn't matter at all right now. Posts like, we are surprised that W&M has 5 wins, or JMU has none make sense. Bracket the March tournament with 12 games to go, and you will get all kinds of things that have no chance of happening by the time we get to March.
W&M and Delaware are the early surprises. Not surprised where Towson and Charleston are given their early schedules. Both of those teams look ready to run off multiple winning streaks going forward. But, there are no really bad teams so it is way too early to predict anything. We will know more in 3 weeks or so. Expect neither Charleston nor Towson to be in a Saturday position then.

I wasn't saying the tiebreakers mattered now. I was saying that if the tiebreakers did matter now and they are what I think they are, sctvman is wrong.

RE: CAA Tournament “If It Ended Today”
Question for those in the know for tiebreakers:
The CAA handbook is slightly unclear, what do you think?
"Here is how the seeds will be determined:
a. The two teams tied for #1 split during the regular season. (tie not broken).
b. The two #1’s had identical records versus #3. (tie not broken).
c. The two #1’s will have their records compared as a “pool” of the teams tied for #4. If an
advantage is gained, that team will be the #1 seed and the other will be #2.
In the case of the tie for 4th:
a. The teams split during the regular season. (tie not broken).
b. The teams’ records compared against the opponents’ records starting at the top of the standings
– now with the #1 seed established as the first comparison. [This will not be a “pool” comparison
of the two teams that finished the regular season tied because the tie is broken. Further support
of the reason why this is not a “pool” comparison of the tied teams is the example of two teams
tied for first, but one team swept the other and is the clear #1 seed. There would be no reason to
argue a “pool” consideration in that case]."
So here's a hypothetical:
NU and Hofstra finish 12-6 each, tied for 2nd.
W&M and Towson finish 9-9 each, tied for 4th.
NU and Hofstra would both finish 3-1 vs. W&M and Towson, but NU went 2-0 vs. WM and Hofstra went 2-0 vs. Towson. Would the comparison vs. W&M and Towson be pooled? If that's the case we move down the standings and we could potentially end up in a coin flip situation for NU vs. Hofstra for #2 seed. Or would the CAA grant Towson the #4 seed due to their 2-0 record vs. W&M and then grant Hofstra the #2 seed? The last part of the tie break rules seem to imply there might not be a need to pool?

RE: CAA Tournament “If It Ended Today”
It sounds like they go through the standings with tied teams pooled and if necessary start over with tied teams not pooled. In order for W&M to go 9-9, they would have to lose hosting UNCW. Can you link to the CAA handbook?

RE: CAA Tournament “If It Ended Today”
I've only been able to find the 2016-2017 one on the CAA website: http://caasports.com/sports/2015/9/28/Ha...icies.aspx
I stumbled upon this scenario when looking to see if NU had the #2 seed wrapped up but we don't if NU goes 0-2, Hof goes 2-0, W&M go 0-2, and Towson go 1-1 with the loss coming against Hof. If W&M and Towson pool, then for Hof to get 2nd, they would need Drexel to go 2-0 and UNCW to go 1-2 with their 1 win against W&M just to get to a coin flip.

RE: CAA Tournament “If It Ended Today”
Despite only a couple of games left it is a jumbled mess for many teams. Obviously it will all be decided by the end of the weekend, but Thursdays contests will really help clear up a lot of the tie breakers. Saturdays games will certainly have meaning for a bunch of teams as far as seeding goes. It has been a fun year and the CAAT could be crazy as well.

We are one of 4 conferences with the last place team having 5 wins. Anyone can really beat anyone. It'll be an awesome CAAT.

Those four conferences are all good in the Conference RPI. They are the SEC in third, Missouri Valley in eighth, Mid-American in eleventh, and CAA in twelfth. Northeastern has the most extreme RPI in the CAA in 69th, and the CAA is the only conference without a team in the top 68 or bottom 68. UNCW has the worst RPI in the CAA and is 74th worse.

Ties are broken top down. So, if #1 and #2 were to be tied, split head to head matchups, and tiebreakers against #3 - #10 (pooled when there is a tie for those teams) do not break the tie, Tuesday morning's RPI will be used to determine the #1 seed

OK, so Charleston got the 1 and Northeastern the 2. Give me the rest of the possibilities. We also know Delaware is somewhere between 7-10, I think. Did Towson clinch the 5 tonight with Elon's loss?

Delaware is between 7 and 10 because they can't catch Drexel and UNC Wilmington, who play each other. Towson didn't clinch the 5. Elon swept Towson and would win the tiebreaker with 2 wins and a Towson loss. Towson plays before Elon, so if Towson wins at Hofstra, Elon can't move up.
