St. is an abbreviation for Saint. As a St. John's alum you should know this. So you were correcting him for nothing. Whenever you hear people speaking about the school, they say Saint John's. The abbreviation isn't an official thing, it's just easier to spell. New Yorkers are notoriously lazy about such things. Either way is technically correct.
No it's not correct. Saint John's is a school in minnesota. We only go by St. John's. We are not lazy it's the name of our school. It is not "technically correct".
So the TV announcer don't say SAINT John's when talking about the school? But you are lazy, just like the rest of NYC, and your excuse is a load of . Trying to differentiate between your school and a school that nobody on the face of the Earth outside of Minnesota knows is ludicrous.
From now on I will call the school ST John's. Screw the Saint. There are no saints in New York, just a bunch of lazy hypocrites.
Well, in defense of these guys, I actually do think the legal name of controlling entity is "St. John's University, New York Corporation". "St. John's" doesn't appear to have been applied for as a registered trademark until 1995 though so I don't know how militant they were about standardizing their university-wide branding prior to that era. However, I just find it hilarious that they are getting so bent out of shape when their own university prints diplomas with "Saint" on it, essentially calling their own university ignorant, as if St. isn't a universally recognized abbreviation of the word Saint. However, I don't think you can justify calling NYC, which has amassed one of the greatest concentrations of wealth in the history of the world, as lazy.
St. Could also stand for Street, as in "Street John". Seems to be a lot of them in NYC
