I guarantee this is the thinking from Petrino on this hire. This has never "gotten him over the hump", but it has put him close in the past. He's never stayed at one place long enough to see if, once he is close, he can get over the hump. Time will tell if this thinking is justified.

At this late stage, I'm ok with this hire. It's not like we were going to poach a high quality DC at another program. This guy has been at a pretty high level of football .... we'll see what he can do.

Yeah ... sometimes ...

But the NFL has had it's fair share of high powered offenses just crushing the best defenses of their time ...

St. Louis Rams greatest show on turf ...
Washington Redskins super bowls were all with better offenses ...

Honestly, you need a balance of both. You have to have one side of the football to be outstanding. The other side needs to be serviceable.

But consider if you can't scored or you are held to a very low point total, a mediocre offensive team will still win. A team with a strong run game and can generate long time eating drives and good defense usually wins. 07-coffee3

The problem you have is you just hired a DC that hasn't put a good defense on the field in college football since he left Georgia in 2004. It's not a talent issue either since he had far more talent available to him at Auburn and Notre Dame than he's got available at Louisville.

You are preaching to the choir here, I know he is not to great. 07-coffee3
