It was more optional when Northeastern and Georgia State joined to go from 10 to 12. In Northeastern's first season in the CAA, they had Player of the Year who is injured in his 13th NBA season J.J. Barea (was Jose Juan Barea in college), and maybe they brought good luck because George Mason went to the Final Four. Of the eight CAA teams who were there in 2005-2006, Northeastern has the best winning percentage in CAA games since then, and Hofstra is above .500.

I'm going to guess that he meant that Hofstra and Northeastern may not have been invited if the CAA knew they were planning to shut down their football programs. They may well have gone after Stony Brook and Boston U instead. I can't find it, but either the CAA commissioner or someone in the office said they wouldn't have invited Georgia State if they knew they'd be starting football and making tracks for FBS.
