My buddy and I were talking about the same thing while we were watching last night. he seems like the perfect height and athletic ability for an advanced winger, he's just too short to effectively play in a 4 man back. He could easily slot into a 5-4-1 or 5-3-2 (a la Oxlade-Chamberlain, Belerin, Victor Moses, etc.), but I just don't think he has the aerial prowess to consistently make positive impacts on the defensive side of the field in a 4 man flat back. I think Klinsmann definitely had the right idea by moving Yedlin up the field.
