Interesting question:

What's worse. A 4-0 loss at Costa Rica or a 2-0 loss at home to Costa Rica.

As it is, we sit Likely tied for 4th with Honduras at the end of the day (assuming Panama somehow doesn't lose at home to Trinidad) We'll be one point back of 3rd.

If we beat Panama at home, we'll need Costa Rica to beat Honduras. Doing that would ensure no worse than a 4th place Playoff with an Asian team in November. We'd then need probably a win at Trinidad to lock up 3rd, though we could get through with a draw if an already qualified Costa Rica could win at Panama (Sound familiar)

The problem with the 4th place Playoff spot is the opponent. Australia screwed up and now must face Syria for the right to make the playoff. Australia is reigning Asian Champs and probably is a better team than we are right now. If Syria gets through, then we're looking at needing to win a game in freaking Iran (Syria can't host because of the war over there) against an opponent bound and determined to get to the World Cup

4th place is not a fun position. I guess its better than facing a South American team...but not much.
