Number of people who play soccer at some level in the U.S. — second only to China. (Source: FIFA World Football Big Count)

24.3 MILLION

Number of U.S. television viewers of the 2010 World Cup Final between Spain and the Netherlands — more than watched the Rose Bowl (24.04 million), the NCAA men's college basketball championship (23.99 million)

7,985,000

Youth participation of Soccer in America, second highest behind Basketball.

There is no doubt that many Americans play soccer at some level, but not enough of them care enough to play it at a level to reach the World Cup this year or do well in the Olympics. It is basically a safe (assuming no headers allowed) and fun pass time for kids.

The World Cup had record USA TV ratings last time the USA was in the Event:
Quote:Overall, the 2014 tournament was easily the most-watched World Cup ever in the United States.

On ESPN/ESPN2/ABC, the 64 World Cup matches averaged more than 4.5 million viewers, or a 2.8 rating.

By comparison, the 2016 Summer Olympics (another “event” showcase) “averaged 27.5 million viewers” and yet few believe that swimming, track and field , etc are sports most Americans really care about. Source
