And for that 11 mile drive and 10 minute walk, if it's anything like the upper midwest which I imagine it is, the streets are plowed, the sidewalks are shoveled, school buses come and go, people drive to work, and kids walk to school.

Obviously, you've never experienced lake effect snow. Syracuse averages 12 feet of snow per year. The sidewalks aren't always shoveled. Nor all the steps. And the plows do what they can, but often it comes down faster than they can move it. I couldn't believe it when I first moved here. Memphis averages 3 inches of snow per year. We received seven inches of snow last night. That would shut down all of West Tennessee if not most of the state.
