I wouldn't mind an expanding the NIT by another 16 teams with a .500 overall record required a la a bowl game. There are a lot of 2nd place teams in mid majors like Northeastern and Belmont that deserve a bid.

Expanding to 64 allows you to guarantee all 32 D1 conferences a team in the NIT field while ensuring that anyone that deserves an NIT bid gets one. Going to 48 only works if you don't guarantee every conference a team; otherwise you only have 16 at-larges, which is worse than what we had this year when auto bids too 12 of the 32 spots.

Women's basketball seems to have found the sweet spot — 64-team WNIT, 16-team WBI. I'm not sure you even need a third-tier tournament at that point but it's not hurting anyone either.

WNIT is the perfect model IMO.
