A person can chase the flash all their lives and end up with little of any substance in the end. Memphis' best approach is to hire a hot up-and-comer from a mid-major program and allow things to build at a steady pace. In this way you can be making real noise by year three.

Hiring a hotshot ex-NBA'r whose only defined skill is wooing high-schoolers to come play on his team is a far cry from what I would call a qualified candidate to run a national college basketball program. His only job opportunity should be as an assistant coach for AT LEAST 2 years at the major collegiate level or a head coaching job at a low-major program. You don't go from HS to Memphis U in one step. The coaches in this league would eat him alive in the X's and O's department.

I'm a Memphis fan and I hope you guys turn things around sooner rather than later but, this smells very similar to a guy that heads off to the casino to try and "earn" his rent money. Hire a strong mid-major star and then Penny as assistant and you've got my approval. Either way I'll cross my fingers...

So what I got out of that is that next year Memphis will have 473 players, all 4 or 5 stars, a few NBA players and 7 hall of fame coaches on the bench.
