There are 100's of factors that go into a successful college coach. Penny Hardaway hasn't proven he has a single one of them yet.

As others have already said, if you bomb out with Penny, your program is dead for a decade.

I'll give the Penny Hardaway experiment 15-1 odds of turning out better than Tubby, a proven head coach with a national championship. It's like comparing men to babies. It's like betting a 24 year old MBA grad will run GE better than the current CEO with 15 years of experience. 01-wingedeagle

The difference between Memphis and Houston and Memphis is night and day.
Memphis has boosters who will not accept mediocrity now in basketball.
Houston did not have that kind of structure in place then.
IF Hardaway as a hire craters...the Memphis boosters will move on to the next guy.

No solid coach will touch you because they'll know they are gone the second they struggle. EVERYBODY struggles when taking over a new program. Gregg Marshall went to our AD after his first year and begged to be fired. He wanted to leave. Memphis is not Duke/Kentucky/Kansas/Indiana/UCLA yet they'll have a reputation of putting more pressure on their prospective head coaches than all the other schools combined. Add in the fact that Memphis is not a member of a "Power 5" league and the job will be passed over by all - hence you'll be dead for a decade until the reputation fades.

Sure you'll be able to hire the retreads and just about every other coach you shouldn't hire... but the good ones will say no.

Sounds like you're making the case for them to hire Penny ... since he appears to want the gig.

Sure. If that is the best they can do. And if it is then they are more down than I even thought they were.

That's a risk they have to take, though. There's always the chance Penny Hardaway becomes Clyde Drexler 2.0. and they have to burn it all down and start over. But he could also end up being Frank Martin 2.0. Martin was only hired by K-State to try and salvage a top-10 recruiting class after Bob Huggins left for WV, and he ended up becoming one of their most successful coaches ever.

I'm still bitter over John Currie running Frank Martin out of Manhattan ....
