Gregg Marshall went to our AD after his first year and begged to be fired. He wanted to leave. Memphis is not Duke/Kentucky/Kansas/Indiana/UCLA yet they'll have a reputation of putting more pressure on their prospective head coaches than all the other schools combined. Add in the fact that Memphis is not a member of a "Power 5" league and the job will be passed over by all - hence you'll be dead for a decade until the reputation fades.

Sure you'll be able to hire the retreads and just about every other coach you shouldn't hire... but the good ones will say no.

Sounds like you're making the case for them to hire Penny ... since he appears to want the gig.

Sure. If that is the best they can do. And if it is then they are more down than I even thought they were.

That's a risk they have to take, though. There's always the chance Penny Hardaway becomes Clyde Drexler 2.0. and they have to burn it all down and start over. But he could also end up being Frank Martin 2.0. Martin was only hired by K-State to try and salvage a top-10 recruiting class after Bob Huggins left for WV, and he ended up becoming one of their most successful coaches ever.

I'm still bitter over John Currie running Frank Martin out of Manhattan ....

Umm, so a guy being hired with 7 years college assistant experience (hell he has triple Penny's high school coaching history) is the same as a guy who last had any serious college experience 20+ years ago?

Clyde the glide is the proper reference here, because you literally can't find another example like that. In fact I challenge the Memphis penny supporters to find an example of a player going directly to coaching division 1 college or the NBA who has succeeded at their first job.
