Fans got to see their Northwestern football team in action for the first time today at Camp Kenosha. With the winds up, the defense took full advantage, hauling in three interceptions and holding the rushing offense to only 2.9 yards per carry.

In the first series of the scrimmage, quarterback Tony Stauss (Racine, Wis./ Horlick) led the offense to a first-down, but safety Jarvis Adams (Tallahassee, Fla./Godby) picked off a Stauss pass on the sixth play of the drive. Cornerback Sundi Brewer-Griffin (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) intercepted a Brett Basanez (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) pass on the next series. The defense then held serve twice more before cornerback Raheem Covington (Pine Hill, N.J./ Overbrook) picked off Stauss again.

"I told the guys we have to be ball hogs," Covington said. "That's what we tried to do today, and some of the guys got in there and made some big plays."

On the day, Stauss finished 9-for-15 for 70 yards and two interceptions. Basanez racked up 127 yards through the air, including a touchdown and an interception, and Alexander Webb (Dallas Texas/Highland Park) was 5-for-8 for 72 yards.

"I'm sure Tony (Stauss) wished he had a better day, but I think we have a good situation at quarterback," said Head Coach Randy Walker. "We have three quarterbacks who are getting better and better, and that is really reassuring."

The defensive line had a strong showing, holding the leading rusher of the day, Kevin Lawrence (Montreal, Que./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)) to 31 yards on eight carries. True freshman Clifton Dawson (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada/ Birchmont Park Coll. Inst.) picked up 24 yards on seven carries, including a one- yard touchdown run.

A couple of true freshmen had big days for the receiving corps. Mark Philmore (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) caught four passes for 84 yards, including a 42-yard grab down the sideline. Brandon Horn (Farmington, Mich./Detroit Country Day) also had four receptions, racking up 59 yards and the only receiving touchdown of the day.

Receivers Jon Schweighardt (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) and Kunle Patrick (Brooklyn N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) were given the day off, as were Pat Durr (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles) and Marvin Ward (Landover, Md./ Eleanor Roosevelt).

"I know we have some upperclassmen who can play," Walker said. "I know Jon (Schweighardt) and Kunle (Patrick) can catch, but we think we have some young guys that can play too. And they did today."

CAMP NOTES: Coach Walker cut Friday's afternoon session short and took his team to nearby Carthage College for some swimming. Instead of competing on the field, Walker had the different positions square off in a relay race, which the defensive ends won by a few seconds.

UP NEXT: The Wildcats hold their next practice on Monday at 8:40 a.m.
