Monday meant the first two-a-day session for the Wildcats, as the team practiced on UW-Parkside's fields from 8:40-11 a.m. and again from 4-6 p.m. It was another hot day here in Kenosha, but a continuous breeze made things a little more bearable. However, the forecast is calling for rain on Tuesday, which could at least cool things off and provide a bit of a respite.

Both sessions were in helmets and shoulder pads only, but emotions got testy during the morning. During 7-on-7 and then 11-on-11 drills, players continually failed to heed the coaches' orders to stay on their feet, both on offense and defense. The session culminated with Walker giving his team a stern talk about staying on their feet.

Afterward, Walker was more sensitive to the situation.

"We have a lot of guys who are out here learning how to play at this level for the first time," he said. "We've also got guys who are fighting for spots, whereas they may have felt they weren't the last few years.

"What I told the guys was they will have plenty of time to go full-tilt after each other when we strap on the full pads [Wednesday]. But we need to get some quality work in between now and then -- we can't be going at full go yet."

Adding insult to injury was the situation with the silver jerseys and the purple jerseys. A new addition to the camp this year, offensive players who were considered by the coaches to have a standout practice are rewarded with a silver jersey for the next session, while defensive players are honored with a purple uniform.

In Monday's morning session, four offensive players were outfitted in silver. Monday afternoon, no silver could be found on the field. The situation was similar on the other side of the ball, where only one purple shirt was worn.

However, there is a good bet silver and purple will dot the lineup Tuesday morning -- consider the lesson heeded. Monday's afternoon session was still lively, but both sides did a much better job at keeping their feet and their balance. Walker was definitely pleased after the session.

"That was a lot better," he said. "By and large, they stayed on their feet. It's a fine line between being too aggressive when you're doing what we're doing, but I think they got it and they played a lot better."

The team will have another single session on Tuesday morning, then be given some extra rest time before going to full pads on Wednesday.
