Former Blue Raider, Kelly Holcomb, had surgery on his right shoulder last week and will need four to six months of rehab.

Holcomb played through some discomfort in his shoulder last season, but didn't feel any intense pain until about eight days ago.

I hope with surgery and rehab he will be back strong again.

Holcomb played from 91-94. His name was all over the record book and still is, but was supplanted by the offensive onslaught by former QB Wes Counts and our offensive coordinator, Larry Fedora - now OC at Florida.

Holcomb started every game in his career but one which he missed for surgery for a broken jaw and only then because the swelling had not gone down. Holcomb had broke his jaw against Georgia Southern in the first half of a game and finished the game. Holcomb is a tough guy on the field and has played on broken leg bones for the Browns.

Holcomb still holds the Completion % (15 attempts) record at 21-23 for 91.3.

In his freshman year, we played at Florida State when they were ranked #1 in 1A and we were still 1AA. He played well and set a record for consecutive completions (13) which stood until Wes Counts's senior season in 2001 when Counts passed for 15 straight completions.

Career total passing yards he is 2nd in the reecord book at 7064. He is third in career passing TDs, and third in career passing completion percentage at 58.2%, and third in Passing efficiency for his carrer at 135.1 (501-861-25). Holcomb is second in total career offense yards at 6998, Holcomb threw for 200 yards or more 12 times in his career and over 300 yards three times.

Holcomb played under Boots Donnelly, now MT AD. Boots was an extremely hard nosed, my way or the highway, coach.

Thanks for the info on Holcomb, I figured he was probably pretty high up there. Do you know what Wes Counts is doing now? I bet many do not remember he was the first SBC Player of the Year in football.

After college, he played a year of arena ball until late in the season he broke his leg. The last I heard he is working in south Florida in construction. A very tough minded individual, the kind you would want next to you in a foxhole. I have a lot of respect for what he did at Middle Tennessee. I think he was underrated his whole career and not fully appreciated by his coaches. Everything he achieved was through his hard work.

Wes Counts grew up around Middle Tennessee, being decked out in blue raider gear even as a toddler. Both parents worked in the Athletic department and growing up Wes was on the sidelines, standing by the coaches keeping the headset cables from getting tangled, when Kelly Holcomb and Jonathan Quinn, both of whom are now in the NFL, were leading the Blue Raiders as quarterbacks.

When he was signed out of HS, some detractors said it was because his parents were in the athletic department, but as a redshirt freshman, he came in as relief for an injured QB in the very first game in the expanded Floyd stadium in front of the largest home crowd (28K) to ever see a Raider football game and led the Raiders to a one-point victory.

Our All-Time Passing Leader is guess who? Jake Delhomme of the Carolina Panthers. Nobody is even close to him in passing attempts, completions, yards, and TD's. We are hoping Jerry Babb will pass him up in about 3 more seasons :D

I think Babb could do it, if he continues to play well. And with the recievers we have coming in next year I could see Babb doing it.

I spoke to Kelly the other night at the WKU/MT basketball game. Seems to have a very good head on his shoulders. His arm is still in a sling.

I'm still looking for that Kelly Holcomb mustard and barbecue sauce in Murfreesboro grocery stores. It is in the local markets in the Cleveland area.

Kelly destroyed my hopes of getting a state championship in football in 1990. We were ranked #1 in the state. That high school team (Oak Ridge) had 2 players play in the NFL and several play for SEC schools. I had never seen a high school quaterback throw the ball as hard as Kelly could.
