Seminoles finish the sweep of Virginia Tech

The Florida State Seminole baseball team completed the three-game sweep over Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday with an 8-1 victory at Dick Howser Stadium. Center fielder Shane Robinson wasted no time extending his hitting streak to thirty-three games with a single in the first inning, and never looked back. Robinson finished with three hits, including his second homerun of the season. Right fielder Jack Rye also had three hits, while Mark Sauls pitched six innings of three-hit ball to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Bryan Henry, Kevin Lynch, and Tyler Chambliss combined to shut out Tech for the final three innings of the game.

Despite the score, the Seminole offense had some trouble taking advantage of opportunities, stranding eleven base runners, and hitting into three double plays.

After Robinson's first-inning single, a wild pitch moved him to second before catcher Aaron Cheesman brought him with with a base hit to right field. Cheesman took second on the play when the VT right fielder had trouble picking up the ball, and scored when Rye singled to center to give FSU a 2-0 lead.

Two innings later, the Noles picked up another run when Robinson reached on an infield single, went to third on a double to left by left fielder Gibbs Chapman, and scored on another RBI-single by Rye.

The Hokies' only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning when third baseman Bryan Thomas singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Jose Rojas.

The Seminoles answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning when Cheesman scored on a wild pitch, Rye scored on a fielder's choice, and Peacher came home on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-1.

An inning later, Robinson's two-run blast over the left field wall scored second baseman Tony Thomas Jr and gave the Tribe an 8-1

With the sweep, the Seminoles improved to 24-4 on the season, and 3-0 in the ACC. Virginia Tech fell to 6-8 and 1-6 in conference play. FSU will now take a day off before traveling to Jacksonville for a game on Tuesday against the Dolphins. The game will be played at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville with at 7:00 pm start. Hunter Jones (3-0, 3.65 ERA) will be on hill for Florida State.

I once read that it's been almost 20 years since we have beaten FSU in ANYTHING. Hopefully that changes soon. I had hope women's basketball could get it done, but 5 combined OTs had the Hokies coming up short each time.

My youngest sister has a master's degree from FSU (middle 70s) and went to graduate school at Virginia Tech (2004). She told me that Virginia Tech wasn't very good in baseball. I do know that Virginia Tech would beat us in basketball. Football... it will be a GREAT game to watch. :D

Your sister is actually wrong. While our baseball program isn't up to par with FSU, it certainly doesn't "suck" either. Most seasons, we are well above .500. We're average. Not great, but not bad.

Also, I wouldn't say we'd beat you in basketball. You did beat us earlier this year. We have also lost to Clemson. We have NO talent on our team, just a really good coach who has made a TEAM out of the kids.

How could my sister be wrong... after all... it's just her opinion of watching Hokie baseball in person after watching and listening to Seminole baseball. Little hard to compare the two programs... :D

Our baseball program I understand, used to be on of the nation's better programs. Now, compared to FSU, we aren't very good, but compared to the nation, we're better than average.

I supposed it isn't fair to compare one college baseball team with another since coaching styles are always different... :D
