BURLINGTON, N.C. -- North Carolina recruit JamesOn Curry pleaded guilty Monday to drug charges and was sentenced to three years' probation.
Curry, the leading scorer in state high school basketball history, pleaded guilty to six counts: two each of possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana; two each of the sale of marijuana and two each of delivering marijuana, in Alamance County court.
He was sentenced to 36 months of probation, 200 hours of community service and various fines.
Curry was kicked off the Eastern Alamance team shortly after his arrest in February. He was one of 49 students arrested month after a systemwide undercover drug investigation by the Alamance County Sheriff's Office and the Alamance-Burlington schools. The operation was aimed at dealers and distributors, authorities said.
Last summer, Curry committed to North Carolina. An athletic department spokesman has said previously that Curry's scholarship has not been revoked.
North Carolina spokesman Steve Kirschner said the school would have no further comment until coach Roy Williams returns from the Final Four in San Antonio and speaks with Curry and his family.
oh well, i don't want him now. this opens up a schollie so we can sign a big man, right?

I think pleading guilty was very smart athletically for him. Showing people he will own up to his mistakes should help his case if he still wants to play at UNC, but it remains to be seenif we'll still take hime. If he does, I would like to see the reins Roy puts on him! Honestly, I think everyone deserves a second chance, I think he may have learned something from this. Lets hope so, for his sake, not just UNC basketball.

I think it's pretty much a given he's not coming. Roy said something about how he'd made a decision, but he won't announce it until he's talked with JamesOn and his family. I think we all see the writing on the wall with that (why would he have to talk to JamesOn first if he was still going to let him come here?)
We won't have an extra scholarship unless somebody goes pro or Damion Grant doesn't come back. Speaking of Grant, I think it's imperative we find out what's going on there. We either need him on the court, or we need to get somebody else out there in his place. I'm not saying do the man dirty and leave him out on the street cold... but, he's now gotten two years of free college education for a few games' worth of playing time. I'm not even sure if he made it into a game this year (if he did, it was only once). If he can't offer us anything next year, I've got no qualms about Roy letting him know that now and going after someone else.

JD, I don't blame Roy for this at all. A degree from UNC MEANS something. It is one of the best private schools in the U.S. Class all the way. You're a UNC grad. So am I. We must maintain some sort of standards for our alma mater to stand tall. I kind of hate it for Jameson. He could have helped us a lot on the team. But there is no room for drug dealers at UNC. Let him go to Kentucky or somewhere.

This kid made a HUGE mistake but he has to be accountable for his actions. I would've lost alot of respect for the Heels if they gave him a 'ship after pleading guilty to something as serious as this.

I feel the same way. I didn't really understand why we needed another short 2-guard in the first place, but I wanted Roy to honor the scholarship when he first got the job here. It was only the right thing to do then.
But, JamesOn messed up big time... and this is the only way we could maintain our integrity and standards. I really think this was the best thing to happen, because now JamesOn will realize that his actions have consequences. If he'd avoided jail time and still earned a scholarship to UNC, he might have thought he was above the law. Now, he'll (hopefully) learn from it and never let something like that happen again.

I said private school. I meant public. It's been a long day.

Glad you caught that Sue. I doubt anyone feels worse about this than JamesOn. He knows what he lost. I can only hope that he recognizes his mistake, learns from it, and becomes the best man he can be. Everyone screws up. Not everyone screws up and learns.

hey, sorry bout the loss (Curry). Rumors are he's lookin at Cincy, Houston, and Memphis. (those are just rumors). I just wanted to clear the air and say we already have 7 recruits and no scholorships left. I think its great with what your school did, by rejecting JamesOn, and i hope Memphis would do the same if ever in that situation. It shows class. Good luck next year!!!
