1) How we look early. Do we show up in VT uniforms or do we just show up. We cannot afford a lull from the getgo. If Miami gets up 14-0 early, Abraham Lincoln will show more signs of being alive than VT and the fans. No jumps, no fumbled snaps, fundamental execution.
2) Putting points on the board when the occasion presents itself. No one wants to see us win the statistical battle. We have to win the game. We aren't there to stay with Miami. This means that we must take advantage of good field position when we have it. No one has posted on it much, but we did miss a key field goal vs WVU.
3) As error free as we can be. Remember we almost beat these guys when Grant completed as many passes to them as to our guys. If we watch the turnovers and avoid the penalties that put us in the hole and don't give tham automatics on defense, we will have a chance.
4) Brock Berlin- as in pressure this guy. If he has time to look over the field before he makes the throw, it will be a long day. It is just that simple.
5) Tackle. Sorry Bud, I love you man. But we ain't tackling. Tackling is when you use your arms to wrap around your opponent and he doesn't get away. It isn't hitting, where the running back can bounce off and continue to keep running. Ask Brandon Semones about it. It is a matter of zeroing in on the opponents waist, wrapping your arms around thusly,.. . you get the idea. No matter how much juking and jiving the guy does, zero on his waist and he will be there. Oh, and while I am at it, the back coming out of the backfield and the tight ends are eligible receivers, even if VT doesn't throw to them.
6) Special Teams- No, we never want to be in a position where we are depending on the special teams to make a play in order to win a ball game. You win maybe 1 out of 10 on that. But the ST's can give us some insurance points and valuable field position.
7) Heart- How much do you have? This is our house and our field. No one would be upset about losing to WVU if we had given our best effort and failed. But that isn't what happened. Sure, we lost 26-24 2 years ago but nobody was burying the performance, because we played our butts off. The effort was there then. It needs to be found again.
Go Hokies.
