Freshman guard was injured in Sunday's game at Duke

Jan. 13, 2003

Wake Forest freshman guard Justin Gray, a starter in 10 of the Deacons' 11 games this season, is undergoing surgery tonight for a fractured jaw suffered in Sunday's game at Duke.

Gray's status will be evaluated later this week, but he is "extremely doubtful" for Wednesday night's game against nationally-ranked Maryland, according to head coach Skip Prosser. He will be out of action for an indefinite amount of time.

"This is certainly an obstacle for our team," Prosser said. "But this is the hand we've been dealt and we need to find a way to win (without him)."

Gray is averaging 10.5 assists, 4.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He leads the team and ranks seventh in the ACC in assists per game. Among all freshmen in the ACC, Gray ranks fifth in scoring.

Gray did not start Sunday at Duke for the first time this season after reporting late to a team function earlier in the week. Sophomore Jamaal Levy started in his place at Duke.

"Indefinitely" could mean anything from 2 weeks to an extended period of time. Let's hope for the former and wish this courageous young man a speedy recovery. He actually returned to play near the end of the game...I can't imagine the pain he must have been feeling...
