This is an actual telescopic image of the area around the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, Sagittarius A*. It has a mass of more than 4 million suns. The high definition visual effect is due to the image being taken in polarized light.

The image was produced by the Event Horizon Telescope, which is not a single telescope, but a collaboration of telescopes around the world. By working together they can produce an image equivalent to one made by a telescope that is the diameter of the Earth.

I've always found it fascinating that we're just specks on a rock rotating around a star, in a system that is itself a speck in a vast galaxy with that monster at its core.
