URHAM -- The Chronicle, Duke University's student-run newspaper, printed an apology Friday for a sports story that likened forward Luol Deng, a Sudanese player, to an ape.

"Luol Deng went up strong with his orangutan arms, like he always does," read the lead paragraph of a story Thursday about Duke's 93-75 victory over Virginia the previous night.

The description sparked angry letters to the editor that were published Friday, including one from a business school graduate who was "ashamed to share school ties with your paper today" and another student who called the phrase "far beyond the realm of good taste."

Alex Garinger, The Chronicle's editor, wrote in the apology that neither the story's writer nor its editors intended to evoke any racial stereotypes.

"We are re-examining every part of our writing and editing processes to ensure that something of this level of insensitivity and thoughtlessness never happens again," he wrote.

The Chronicle also planned to send letters of apology to Deng, head coach Mike Krzyzewski and athletics director Joe Alleva, and to initiate sensitivity awareness discussions among the staff. The line has been removed from the online version of the article.
Staff writer Vicki Cheng can be reached at 956-2414 or

This settles it for me, the chronicle is down right pathetic.

What do you think about this Natey boy?

This is an example of someone just making a mistake... Do you honestly think he's a racist or a racial profiler?

The job of an editor is to find and fix mistakes. If anything it was incredibly poor judgement to let that go to print.

I dont know the guy but it is definitley within the realm of possibity that he was motivated by racisim. Is there any chance at all that he would mistakenly describe...let's say Shavlick Randolph... as having Orangutan arms? I dont think so.

I don't know the guy either, but it certainly doesn't seem motivated by racism. The guy does have extremely long arms, and I think that's the only parallel he was drawing between Luol and an orangutan. It sounds like the guy isn't the most racially sensitive in the world if his subconscious has him describe Deng's arms as "orangutan", but certainly you can't assume it was motivated by racism.

of course it wasn't motivated by racism. this is just another stupid way to bash duke, made up by the jealous and biased UNC fans. Talk about having nothing to do but sit around and scrutinize a, for the most part, classy program.

Let's talk about phil ford.

You didnt answer my question. Is there any possibility that Randolph would ever be described as having Orangutan arms?

The answer is no and the reason is because he is white.

Nice job FS. You talk about "class" and then show yourself to be rather lacking.

When you refer to someone as a primate in todays racially sensitive world, it is considered racist. Ask Jimmy the Greek. Sorry, ,,,,,,,,,,it is a PC kinda world.

No, the reason is because Shav doesn't have obscenely long arms.

You obviously don't understand the definition of racism, either.

Nate, 4 Black Doctors are looking to hire a new doctor into their paractice. Two men, one black, one white are equally qualified. There are no differences in their abliities. They choose the black man because of his skin color only. Is that racist behavior? Yes or no answer accepted only please.

What does this have to do with anything? Looks like there was more outrage from dook students than from anyone else.

Seems to me that you were just sitting around looking for a reason to bash UNC.

This guy just seems to have a poor judgment in words and subjects to write about. IIRC, this is the same guy that suggested Duke students throw little bags of flour DJ Strawberry.
