:bang: So, I sign up for DSL service on 12/9/03. They (Verizon) send me the modem and the ancillary things to get it going. They email me to let me know the service could be started as/of 12/19. I install everything and I get an error message. I call the tech folks and they determine there is a problem with their wiring outside my home. I would be contacted within 48 hours to get it taken care of. 12/26 I call and tell them I have not heard from them. I am told the repair ticket had not been initiated. :bang: I was to be put "at the top of the list" and would hear from them asap. On 1/2/04 I call them and tell them I want to cancel the service as I had not heard from them about the repair. The woman (and I know she is just answering the phone) tries to keep the business. She even claims a repair ticket had been initiated on the 19th. I ask her why I had not heard from anyone and she could not answer. After repeated attempts at saving their business I finally told her, in no uncertain terms, that if this was an example of their customer service they needed to reexamine their methodology. I did not want their service. :bang:
I called Comcast that day and will have Cable Internet hooked up this Thursday. 04-rock

I've had my Comcast cable modem since late 2001 and have been happy with its performance as well as Comcast customer service. I've had very few occasions where service was down, and when it was, I received prompt answers to my questions from the CSRs (with minimal time on hold) and was only without service over 24 hours one time (and that was after a major windstorm in the ATL).

Good luck...and enjoy waving bye-bye to dial up!

I don't know about the rest of the country... but in NW Arkansas, cable hookup is not only just as fast/if not faster then DSL, it's $25 bucks cheaper per month as well. I have a cable hookup and have no complaints whatsoever.

Ameritech DSL is dropping the ball like that in Toledo too. The local cable company is doing quite well and people are giving up on DSL very fast!

I got DSL from verizon and they shipped my modem to the wrong state, TWICE. finally they ship me a package and they leave half the stuff out. If there was cable internet in my town I'd have gotten it, but there wasn't. Now there is but i'm too lazy to switch over.

You can also look at NetZero's plan. It is dial up but a lot of it is compressed and is quite a bit quicker than regular dial up.

I'm running on Adelphia Cable. It's fast as hell but expensive too. I could probably find something cheaper but it was so much easier just to go through Adelphia cause we already had it for everything else. My internet always works. It doesn't tie up our phone line. The customer service is REALLY good. Too bad it's $45 a month. :bang:
