Vanderbilt vs. the modern MAC:

Miami 33, Vanderbilt 30, in Nashville, Sept. 2, 2000.
Vanderbilt 34, Northern Illinois 30, in Nashville, Sept. 11, 1999
Western Michigan 27, Vanderbilt 24, in Nashville, Oct. 10,. 1998
Vanderbilt, 17, Northern Illinois 7, in DeKalb, Ill., Oct. 11, 1997

Vandy actually might have more of a chance against Toledo than I thought, although I still see Toledo as a solid favorite.

Miami and Western Michigan were decent teams in these eras. In fact, Western Michigan won the MAC West (with a 7-5 record) in 1999. Of course, Toledo finished 10-1 that year, losing the division title by virtue of the loss to Western Michigan.

For what it's worth, Northern Illinois was playing pretty horrible football during these matchups.

In summary: I'd need quite a few points to take Vandy over Toledo.

In the last 5 years, Vanderbilt has lost to a 6-5 Miami(OH) in '00 and a 7-4 Western Michigan in '98. During the same time frame, Vandy only managed to barely eke out a win (34-31) against NIU, a MAC team with a losing record(5-6). All these games were in the confines of Vanderbilt Stadium.

Mississippi State BARELY beat 4-8 Troy State at home last year and lost to them in '01 (9-21). This is the same Troy State that Marshall has crushed two of the last 5 years by a combined score of 66-18 (42-12, 24-6).

Neither of these SEC schools could compete with the top 6 schools in the MAC this year, imo. That said, the top 6 six schools in the MAC would be hard pressed to win against the top 6 schools in the SEC, especially since those schools will not visit a MAC venue and all the contests would be at SEC houses.

So, don't blow smoke up our arses about Vandy and we'll try to give the top SEC schools some respect.
Otay?

Oh, I don't care. MAC posters voting for Toledo won't change my thoughts. Just shows you all how uninformed some people are. And you should be happy about beating Alabama in it's worst year in god knows how long. Be proud! It only happens once in a few centuries!!!
It's only so rare because 'Bama, UGa and most other SEC schools are too damn cowardly to play up north.

Still, Toledo would clock Vanderbilt. In fact the stronger MAC teams have been better than the SEC-W for several years now.

If you don't know that much then you should remember the old proverb, "Better to keep your mouth shut and let them think you a fool rather than open it and prove them right."

LOL, you all should take pride in beating Vandy in the last few years. You really should. But the Vandy team next year is better then the one from 4 years ago and last year. And with Cutler improving, their running game getting better, and a coach who actually knows what he is doing, they would beat any MAC team.

Cowardly? What advantage do we have playing a D2 team such as yourself? It hurts our SOS and we make 0 money in your stadium. LOL, come on.

"the top 6 six schools in the MAC would be hard pressed to win against the top 6 schools in the SEC"

Hard-Pressed? LOL

I see you still think the MAC is D2, huh? Anyway, your statement I have quoted above is wrong. When a contract is signed between two schools, the visiting team is paid to come into the other team's stadium. Georgia would make money by coming to play at Toledo because Toledo would pay them. It happens all the time!

Marshall
Toledo
Miami
UCF

Why do that when we can have some patsy school come here and pay them a ridiculous small amount and fill up 92,000 and keep all the money? lol

You are not getting the point. You could ask for a lot of money to come to someone's stadium. It would make up for the 82,000 at your home stadium. We paid Minnesota either 500,000 or 750,000 to come to Toledo in 2001; can't remember which it was. Don't you think Georgia would get more than Minnesota?

I know you can make money on tickets for a home game, plus concessions and all; however you also have to pay people to work consessions, security, workers taking tickets at the gate, people to clean up afterwards, etc.....that takes away from your income.

And don't tell me that you will have travelling costs because Toledo is not a tourist town; your costs would be less than if Toledo travelled to play at Georgia.

Apparently, "half" may have been an underestimate.

Yes, losing tends to do that.

And, just to add two other fun facts to know and tell:

(1) My MAC school has a winning record against the current members of the SEC over the last 30 years.

(2) Vandy has never beaten a MAC team that finished the season with a winning record.

I'm sure Miami AD Brad Bates (a former Vandy employee) would be happy to discuss a 2-for-1 with any SEC school willing to break with long-standing Southern tradition and actually schedule a non-conference ROAD game outside the region.

I lived in Athens.
I worked in Athens.
Athens is not a tourist town.

(And nice inflation of your attendance figures.)

Anyway Jawja et al are clearly cowards. Even this Dawg fan admits they would rather schedule a patsy than have a good team like Toledo come to town...not to mention they aren't going to travel to any good teams. Vince Drooly would probably get lynched if he proposed the idea of a game out of the southeast for the 'Dawgs.

Meanwhile the rest of the world progresses as a few hundred thousand yokels are kept occupied for a few hours each week in the autumn, pretending they understand the game better than Andy Griffeth's famous skit.

NIU lost at home to Vandy in '97, in the midst of an 0-11 season, 17-7. Vandy muffed a punt that we returned for a TD, but the refs (correctly ) ruled it a muff with no advancement possible. Later in the game, our QB dropped the ball and their DLineman picked it up and ran it in for a TD. Had 'em on the ropes, and we were horrendous.

In '99, we played them in Nashville and had a 24-3 lead, but they mounted a big comeback and won. We finished 5-6 that year, and still weren't a very good team.

If anyone is saying that Vandy would definitely beat the top MAC teams, they are smoking far too much crack.

Could they beat the top MAC teams - duh! Would they regularly - 'fraid not.

As for Wake and NIU beating them....uh, didn't Wake go to a bowl game and beat Oregon? Sorry, maybe I missed Vandy's bowl game - how'd they do??

Funny how Vanderbilt is one of just two schools that have been playing by the rules and they haven't had a winning season since 1982. Goes to show you that honest schools can't beat cheaters!
