ESPN.com news services

Barry Bonds is open to ending his career in the American League as a designated hitter -- just not in Boston.

The Boston Globe reported in Friday's editions that Bonds said the town was "too racist for me" and that he would "never play there."

According to the report, Bonds is relying on word of mouth for his opinion.

"[My impression is based] only [on] what guys have said," he told the paper, "but that's been going on ever since my dad [Bobby, who played 14 years in the majors] was playing baseball. I can't play like that. That's not for me, brother."

Bonds went on to dispute a suggestion that Boston's racial climate was improving, saying "It ain't changing. It ain't changing nowhere."

Giants general manager Brian Sabean, speaking with ESPN Radio on Friday night, didn't seem troubled by his star's latest comments.

"I don't know how and when and what the context was that he put them out their to quote the way he did," Sabean said. "But that's really not my business. This is a country of free speech, and again, I don't know the context.

"If those are his feelings, those are his feelings. He's the guy that has to live with what he says and what he does, and we all know you're in charge of your own responsibility to say and do the right thing but I don't think it was anything malicious from being on the outside looking in. And again, I don't take this to any degree. I take it with a grain of salt."

Wouldn't it be funny if Bonds was to retire and was playing his last couple of games in Boston and needed one more hr to get the record??? Think they would pitch to him?

i don't see how he can be considered a jerk anymore. He's always nice to the media, and i always see him laughing with his teammates.

Everyone on this board loves Ted Williams, but he was a bigger jerk than Bonds.

For the record, i wouldn't want to play in Boston, either.

Boston is full of a bunch of self righteous ********, they probably are racist, and even if they arent it serves them right.

I agree, Philly fans(Eagles, Flyers, Sixers, Phillies), are some of the most fair-weather fans I have ever seen....

If you look at Barry wrong he accuses you of being racist.

Gdawgs, i thought you never made stupid comments. I was wrong.

Is Boston a racist town? that's very possible. it has that label, and after all, they were the last team to get a black player.

Besides this, Bonds called the Media racist, and he could very well be right.

It's not a stupid comment. I'm tired of Barry calling everyone a racist. Is Boston a racist town? How should I know? But then again, how should Barry know?

I like Philly, and I think their fans are the best. Too call them fair weather fans is idiotic, fair weather fans don't show up in droves to every game no matter what the sport like Philly fans do. They just demand perfection. Their anger is understandable (atleast with the Eagles and Phillies) considering the money the teams spend to choke every year.

If any cities fans are notoriously fair-weathered, it is LA. Philly fans have a ton of passion, heck I'd be angry too if none of my teams have won anything in years like in Philly.

Anyways I don't see them as being fair weather fans, just misunderstood.

I don't like them because they're classless jerks. I don't have a problem with demanding perfection, heck, I demand perfection from my team's, too. But when you do things like throw batteries on at opposing teams players, you've gone too far.

Its not fair to judge a whole fan base on a couple of idiots. I watched someone drop a cooler on the flag guy at a NASCAR race last sunday. Does that mean all NASCAR fans are classless jerks? OR atleast all NASCAR fans at Pocono?

Fans of all teams do stupid things on occaison. I just don think it is fair that Philly is always the town that gets the bad rap. Who cares if they booed Santa or Destinies Child? It's harmless.

Just because they express themselves differently doesn't mean their way is wrong.
