my point is this: If you're going to get mad because the people of iraq cheer over one horrible events, you should consider the times that other countries have cheered things that weren't necessarily wonderful either.
Am i saying that iraq is right to do this? Of course not.

SD, i'm not trying to get on a high horse, i'm just playing the devil's advocate.

It's obvious that my opinion in this situation is different from your own, so i'll just agree to disagree with you.

It's funny... I JUST (as in 5 minutes ago) wrote an article about this for my US 2 class.

About the A-Bomb... it was the right decision. Tojo was too arrogant to think about surredering... the citizens didn't want to surrender... so it would have to mean war... if we tried to attack by sea... we're subject of a HIGHLY effective kamikaze... if we tried to attack by land... we're subject to FAR superior fighters, and we know what it's like from Vietnam trying to invade a "jungle-ish" country (the islands are mostly jungle). The only thing left is to attack by air, and we did, and did it well.

Today's Fun Factoids:

If we dropped a hydrogen bomb on Iraq, this would happen:

- The mushroom cloud would be 8 miles across and 27 miles high.
- Radioactive mud would fall out of the sky followed by heavy rain.
- 80 million tons of earth would be vaporised.
- The reaction would yield 10 magatons (equivalent to 10 million tons of TNT).
- A shock wave would radiate from the point of explosion at supersonic speeds, and would be capable of destroying buildings within a radius of several miles.
- The intense white light would cause permanent blindness to people gazing at it from a distance of dozens of miles.
- The intense light and heat from the explosion would set combustible materials afire at a range of over a dozen miiles.
- Ground zero would reach a temperature of millions of degrees -- hotter than the surface of the sun -- in less than a second.

That was a long long time ago and there were many many mitigating circumstances, there was a long list of atrosities which came about during WWII, if your gonna try to single out the nuking of the Japanese, than why don't you post all the other things that went down as well. Maybe they should not have attacked US soil eh! Innocent people always die in a war, thats the way it is. The fact is that nuking of Japan saved thousands of US lives, so I fully support the decision, would you rather live in a Nazi controlled nation today!
Theres two sides to every story my friend!!!
IMO, the distinction here is.........Americans (as far as i know mind you; i wasn't there) were cheering about the Abombs because it was revenge for Pearl Harbor and because WW2 was coming to an end. I have never heard anything about Americans cheering that the bombs were GOD'S way of punishing the Japanese.

just my opinion,
Rx

I'm not arguing with anything you said Nate, but the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings occurred way before Vietnam...so the bit about us knowing that invading a "jungle-ish" country like Vietnam doesn't work too well wouldn't have been taken into account then. You probably know this, being the genius that you are 03-wink , but the way you phrased your reasoning made it sound as if the US officials were using their "past experience" with Vietnam as a reason to air-attack Japan.

We DID know this though, at the time of the bombing decision. We knew that it's impossible to win a war in someone else's jungle. Maybe Vietnam is a bad example, because, like you said, it DID happen way after WW2. But, still, there's no denying that you can't beat somebody in their own jungle. There are other circumstances that would prevent a ground attack, also, like island hopping, and of course, the Japs being amazing fighters.
