Even after 16 days of being up there, it (I don't know what it is yet) came down today. They are pretty sure all in the shuttle are dead. :( :(
For those of you alive for the Challenger, is this similar to that?

I remember the Challenger disaster. It was horrible. The worst part was the constant replaying fo the explosions. I think both the two tragedies are very similar in that both of them had a 'first' attached to them. Both tragedies are horrible and I refuse to classify which one is the worst.

This was nothing like the challenger disaster in the following sense:
Almost every school kid in the country was watching the launch of the challenger because it was the first shuttle flight with a teacher on board. I watched it in class and saw my teacher break down in tears even though she didn't know the astronauts personally.

Like LK said, the Challenger launch had more media focus because of Christa McAuliffe. Sadly, I don't think many of us were aware that Columbia was returning home this morning. I'm sure for the Israelis, this disaster would be like the Challenger for them, because of the first Israeli astronaut, a former national hero, being on board.
I still had a sense of deja vu when I got in my car after a morning meeting and heard the news reports on the radio...just 3 days after the 17th anniversary of Challenger... :(
