Billet, Mapp bolster Cavs

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Todd Billet scored 23 points, and Majestic Mapp returned as a leader for Virginia last night, helping the Cavaliers end a three-game skid by beating No. 17 Wake Forest 75-65.

The Cavaliers (2-3 ACC, 11-6) put an embarrassing 18-point loss at Virginia Tech two nights U.VA. 75 WAKE 65earlier behind them, improved to 8-0 at home and hope to have found a point guard ready for the long haul.

Mapp, playing for only the third time this season after missing more than two seasons while undergoing four surgeries to his right knee, scored just three points, but had four assists and gave the Cavaliers energy.


He played 17 minutes and committed just one turnover.

Wake Forest (2-2, 12-2) got 20 points from Josh Howard, and career highs of 20 points from Vytas Danelius and 19 from Taron Downey.

Most notably, Mapp was the difference as he turned the Cavaliers into a more organized team than the one coming off three straight road losses.

He played the last 6:43 of the first half, during which Virginia outscored Wake Forest 20-10, and the first 4:32 of the second half, when Virginia extended its lead to 51-44 and fired up its somber crowd.

After Mapp went out with 15:28 to play, the Demon Deacons got within 55-50 before Devin Smith hit two 3-pointers and Elton Brown added two baskets to make it 65-56.

I watched the game, and I can tell you one thing: Majestic Mapp is a special player and person. He has really showed awesome determination in overcoming all of his knee problems, and when he is playing basketball, he enjoys every moment. BTW, Jenifer's attitude was ridiculous. With that kind of attitude he should be benched, except for when Mapp needs some rest.

They lose to VA Tech but win against Wake Forest. Us Virginian people are crazy sometimes.
