The question of Doh's coaching ability is an often discussed topic among heel fans, of which I am a diehard one. The examples of great, even hall of fame coaches, who struggled early in their careers are enough for me to give the man more time to get the job done. I think he did a great job in his first year. That team was led by one man that could create his own shot, Joseph Forte. Doh didn't do enough to develop other scorers on that team which is a legitimate criticism of him but overall I thought he did a great job. I even picked the heels to lose to providence in the second round of the tourney but he is only a second year head coach who stepped into a situation where he didnt recruit any of these kids. Penn St of course beat Providence and then dispatched my heels but nonetheless, Doh's first year was a success. He took a team w/little to no offense from the point guard(Curry's shot was a complete joke), a big man in Haywood who was outstanding defensively but lacked any cohesive offensive game to say the least(the vast majority of his points came from putbacks or dunks, although he occasionally showed a nice spin move, I cringed when ever he shot a hook or fadeaway, usually a brick), a big man in Lang who for whatever reason never developed anything consistently outside of a hook shot that was never a sure thing of going in, and a kid in Jason Capel who had the offensive ability to score but never would step up. Against the terps that year he had 27 but for the most part didn't look to score enough. Which is where Doh could be blamed but there again, there was obvious tension between forte and capel, not the best situation for a second year head coach to be stepping into.
This year, the team looked pathetic and Doh at times looked completely lost. I don't think the guy is a dunce though nor do I think that our program is heading in the wrong direction. Everett Case or Norm Sloan said that recruiting is 90% of being a good coach. I can't remember which one said it but it is a true statement. K was 38-47 his first three years, including 34 losses his second and third seasons of which 19 were by double digits. He was on the hot seat big time until he started bringing in major talent. Did he just all of a sudden become a good coach? No. I am sure he became better just from experience but that doesn't mean when he was struggling that he was a "bad" coach. He just started bringing in talent. As long as Doh is bringing in the type of classes he has brought in his first two years then I won't be worried. BTW Nate, you said we had 4 Mcd AA's on this year's team, which is not true since you can hardly count Fing. Plus, none of the Mcd AA's we had could create their own shot and were all totally dependent on good guard play to score of which we were woefully lacking this year. You can have a frontline of Mcd AA's but w/out good guard play they are severely hampered.

Great post! I agree with pretty much everything you said.
