I am giving serious, serious consideration to moving to the area. DC area, St. Louis, MO and Portland, Oregon are my target areas.

Mostly I get heartsick looking at the classified ads in the Washington Post (and other newspaper sites), of jobs I'm qualified for that are virtually nonexistent in Oklahoma (where thanks to recent legislation, the state government's idea of "new jobs" is stuff like being a sales clerk in a Bass Pro Shop ... sheesh).

Do I want to come out there?

Serious answers only please.

Thx.

Sooner let me give you a little background...

It really depends on what you are looking for in a location...

I was born and raised mainly in the DC area but we moved to Portland, Or for 2 years when I was in the 7th and 8th grade

wow...NavyDoc remembered me! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[laugh]" title="" src="graemlins/laughing.gif" />

Seriously tho', ST, it would be hard for me to choose between DC and Portland. My family lives two hours north of Portland...and that area of the world is incredibly beautiful, with a lot of "nature" type things to do (the mountains and the beaches are only a short drive away). However...if you want more "culture" I would say move to the DC area. Portland has "culture" too, but it's different than what you can get on the east coast. However...it's also a LOT more expensive to live in DC than in the Northwest.

If I were you, I'd make a list of my priorites and then look at it from that perspective. For money...go to DC...for quality of life (in MY opinion only) go towards Portland. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" /> Hope this helps in some small way! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />

I was born and raised in the DC area. And the one thing I have learned in college is how much I miss that city. I live in the VA suburbs, but I dont care. That is the place I want to live for the rest of my life. Especially if you are in politics, then I say you should definetly make the move to DC. There are so many governmental and private corporations looking for government relations guys, you will be fine.

Northeast DC can be pretty busy, but It's a great place to live -- if you want the safest and best looking area possible, make sure you have some cash and get a place in northwest.

Good answers, everyone (note use of Juan's icon).

In my case ... the case for Portland would be I have close friends there and my best friend lives not all that far away in NorCal. The case against Portland, for me, would be (according to my friend who lives there) is they're not crazy about the weather at times.

The case for the DC area would be, well yes, wages (my work background has been in printing and/or publishing and/or design for about a decade), and the fact there are many many colleges nearby -- mainly because I'd sorta like to go back to school, too. The only case I can think of against DC would be I'm not wholly digging some of the crime statistics I have seen (then again, Oklahoma City isn't really a picnic either in that regard ... and Norman is actually getting worse). I have friends in Charlotte NC, but that's a bit of a stretch.

I might wind up settling on St. Louis -- cost of living isn't that high (but neither are the wages either ... but slightly better than anything OKC has to offer) ... and I have some family (mostly cousins) in Eastern OK I wouldn't be that far from.

All your advice will be taken into deep consideration.

I fully intend to visit one of these days ... I wish it could be during hoops season ... and meet you guys/girls.

Late, and thanks.

True Fact: Maryland has more printing companies per capita than any other state!

Don't ask me why.. or how I know that.. but it is true.

My small advice that I will... don't live right in DC.. it's not worth the cost. Choose Maryland over NoVA... better everything.

I find that locations near Laurel and Bowie keep you close enough to DC to commute there... but far enough away to not feel the expense. Plus, you're close enough to attend every Terps football game and join the rest of us for the basketball games at the many establishments in the area that air them.

I mean, let's face it... what it all boils down to is not money, a job, weather, security etc... it's that you MUST live near the Terps. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

And talk about friends in the area???

Hell you could move here and feel like you grew up here with all teh people you'll know from the board...

Like Pooh said Laurel and Bowie are very nice and affordable...

I moved from Laurel to Bowie...

So I would know...

Plus anyone here could help you out until you got settled for sure...

Bowie is 15 minutes from the UMD campus...

The local Bowie City gym is where Wilcox and Dixon were working before the draft and I've seen Rod Strickland and Tre Johnson in there as well....

Shoot...and if you're lucky, NavyDoc might even decide to show up at one of your social events. Of course...I haven't been that lucky yet. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

I certainly appreciate everything you guys/girls have offered. A lot of what PoohTerp mentioned I had in mind -- I'm not really looking to live in DC proper, but definitely somewhere in Maryland. And yes, the printing company aspect has something to do with it!

I certainly hope things will go my way ... but it might be next summer before the picture becomes clearer as to what I'm going to do. Between now and then I am going to do my best to hoard as much as possible and continue my research.

Thanks again. I can't say enough about what a swell bunch y'all are.

Like Poohterp said, get outside the city (especially outside the Beltway) and the cost isn't too bad.

If you get just a few extra miles you can enjoy real country living and still have the city when you need it.

I commute to a decent job in the heart of the city (Federal Triangle) from a home in a very rural setting in Montgomery County. Didn't cost me an arm and a leg either.
