You know what Greg Norman and I Dream of Jeannie have in common?

They both blew their Masters.

I want to say I don't give a crap what Hootie Johnson does with his precious golf club.

But then there's Martha Burk. Now, if one considered some of my sociopolitical beliefs about my gender (1. I firmly believe women should be paid equally as a man for equal work; 2. I firmly believe the government or any other social institutions do not have the right to tell a woman what to do with her body; and finally, 3. I firmly believe if a woman says "no", she f'n *means* it) would automatically make me company with Burk.

However, the way I view this issue, Burk comes off more like she has a personal vendetta against Augusta rather than trying to be the beacon for feminism. She is just as embarassing in her pigheadedness as Hootie Johnson is in his.

However, Johnson *is* in the right on this issue because Augusta National is not a public entity, but a private one, therefore the powers that be at Augusta continue to have the right to exclude women as they see fit -- however backwards and repugnant that view may be. OTOH, if Augusta was a state-run or a municipal-run entity, then Burk would really have something to gripe about. All Martha Burk is doing with her continued campaign against Augusta is making an a-- of herself and, in my view, cheapening what sociopolitical gains women have gained over time.

It's a private organization. She has no *** **** jurisdiction over the matter, and needs to mind her own f***ing buisness about the whole thing.

If she's going to play stereotypes - I'll play one too.

Furthermore, if she has this much free time, and that big of a problem, why not let her start her own private organization for women, and have it hold a huge golf tourney for women only.

Oh - wait - my bad, that would fail.

Why?

NOBODY F'N WATCHES WOMEN'S GOLF!!!!!!!!

Okay...I know I'm stepping into a minefield here...but here's my humble opinion.

1) The lady from NOW (Ms. Burke) is going about this whole thing the wrong way. I personally believe that discrimination in any form is wrong--but to try and make the Masters die is carrying things a wee bit too far. I actually enjoy watching golf (thanks to Mr. LRT's influence...), and I think that trying to kill the tournement is only going to stir up more people than necessary. In other words, it's counter-productive to her cause.

2) Granted...Augusta National is a "private" course, but I still believe that their discrimination policy is wrong. Rhetorically...if this was an issue of race and not gender, would there even be an argument? The MAIN thing that pisses me off about their "no women" policy is how far they're willing to go to defend it. According to the article in the Washington Post that I read this morning (and no...I didn't click on the link above, so I don't know if it's basically the same thing), Augusta National is paying for everything on its own--when CBS(?) usually pays them between 5 and 10 million dollars for rights to the broadcast. That's a heck of a lot of money to throw away (not even considering how much they'll have to fork out to run the event) just so they don't have to admit women into the club. That sort of arrogance is what really makes me mad about the whole thing.

IMO, both sides are handling this issue the wrong way. Hootie, in his arrogance, is pissing off all kinds of women that don't normally give two hoots (no pun intended) about golf...and Ms. Burke is cutting off her nose to spite her face.

Seriously tho'...if this was an issue of a private club excluding minorities...would you guys be this worked up about it...or is it only okay to discriminate against women?

I say if it was private, fine.

code:

If they wanted an all-black club - fine

And if you think white males have it all, I URGE YOU TO TRY AND GET A SCHOLARSHIP THESE DAYS AS A WHITE MALE. YOU ARE DEAD IN THE WATER FROM THE WORD "GO!" IF YOU'RE A WHITE MALE.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but isn't this the same type of "discrimination" we're raising hell over here?

Fine - let women into Augusta. At the same time, give me my f'n scholarship money.

I forget the exact stat, but it's like some 5 to 10% of scholarships out there do not weight on if you're a white male or not.

That's pathetic, and a slap in the face of this.

GTS...discrimination of ALL types is wrong. However...we're not discussing scholarship money...we're discussing golf, and that point is important to keep in focus...

And believe me...you DON'T want to get into the "poor white middle-class male" discussion with me...my brothers and I have lived it (at least the white middle-class part on my end)...why in the hell do you think that I'm only now--at the age of 32--finally finishing off my Bachelor's Degree? It's called "my parents were too poor to be able to save for college, yet too rich to qualify for financial aid". So save that argument for somebody that needs to hear it.

I know that LL... The way that the Post read this morning was that they let the sponsors go so that they couldn't be swayed by boycotts or other forms of protest...and thus make A.N. bend to the sponsor's pressure. *sigh* This whole thing just stinks.

Actually, people in the golf world, who are on the inside of this issue say that Burke really screwed up here. Not because she can't win the case, or doesn't have rights to protest....but because Hootie Johnson is the most liberal president they've ever had at Augusta. The feeling is that he was already on the way to getting women admitted into the club. Now, Burke has ruined that and it will DEFINITELY NOT HAPPEN now. They will not do it under pressure from someone else. They will do it at their own time and she just made the wait a lot longer.

My personal belief is that this whole issue smacks of hypocrasy. I recently was a member of an all male a capella group and we never once received pressure to allow women in our group. Why? Because there was nothing to be gained by joining. We were small potatos. Burke and her organization are only interested in Augusta because they have something to gain. They would care less about Augusta if they hadn't turned their tournament into the best in the world. There are plenty of other all male clubs. Why aren't they going after those?

True LT...I've never been a big fan of NOW...and I readily admit that Burke is going about this the wrong way. Like I (think) I said above...it's Hootie's whole attitude about this that really irks me. I would have been a little upset if I heard that A.N. was exclusionary (did I spell that correctly? lol) before NOW jumped in...but what REALLY set me off was what I perceived to be his "arrogant attitude". Like I've said before...this whole situation just sucks.

I am still waiting for someone to explain to me how the cause of women is harmed by Augusta national not having any female members. While you are at it, explain how Augusta adding a member furthers the cause of women. I am so sick of special interest groups using extortion to get their way.

The point is, LK, that it shouldn't be an issue to begin with. What was A.N's point in excluding women? Why did they feel that they needed to? Why shouldn't women be allowed to join? What would it hurt? Back in 1990 (I believe...if I remember the date that the Post mentioned yesterday) Shoal Creek in Alabama had a "no blacks" policy that had to be changed before the PGA Championship could be played there...why shouldn't exclusionary policies anywhere be met with the same critical eye? NOW is going after the Masters because of its visibility...and in that sense it's not hypocritical, because you have to pick your battles. Granted...she's going about this all wrong...but the theory behind what she's doing (in my opinion) is still sound.
