I was listening to a talk radio discussion hosted by Ron Smith and the discussion was centered about whether we Americans should allow infringement on the edges of our Constitution in the interest of national security in light of the present world situation. Is the Constitution the way we used to interpret it a rock-hard constant? Do we allow the FBI and CIA to monitor things that we once held sacred for the trade-off in keeping other freedoms and in preserving security?

My opinion is that, yes, if absolutely necessary, we need to provide for national security despite the cost, keeping in mind that it be temporary. But before we start losing freedoms for the Constitutional cause, there are a few things that we can and should have been doing anyway despite hurting people's feelings:

--Secure the damn borders! There is nothing in the Constitution that gives rights to people that want to enter the country illegally.

--Profile, if it is helpful. I have been profiled for insurance rates all my life, so I know it's technically legal. True story: on my way home from the Orange Bowl, I had my shoes searched twice and I watched as a 70 year old man and his wife in a wheelchair were pulled aside and thoroughly searched as they went through the gate. This is a waste of resources.

--Use the 2nd Amendment, that's why we have it. If arming pilots doesn't fit this criteria, I don't know why we have it. It's too simple, except we don't have to have major legislation and 50,000 more government employees to enact it. That's the problem here I see.

If they want to impinge upon the Constitution, they can in my opinion, but they better take the real measures first.

I have no problem with what they are attempting to do, I just have grave doubts that it will do much good. We can hope though...

Rt1--I think profiling is going on and the broad searches of everyone is just a screen. Just my opinion.
