Speaking of which, is there some way for us to get a little PM notification tool that pops up on every page for someone (perhaps under the Hello, JD Heel [ log out ] area) and shows if there are any new messages available?

I know this has been mentioned before, but I don't remember if it was decided to be unfeasible or not.

It's feasible - and is something UDC has been looking into. There's an existing script out there - but it's unstable - and we don't know if it'll cause more harm that good - so he is ... well... murdering that code and putting in some of his own.
