I get a copy of

for $10.50. Think I will put it on a computer I dont use much and play with it. Not sure I want to use it on the new box.

Minimum Requirements

* 800 MHz Intel-compatible processor
* 512MB of RAM
* DirectX 9.0-Capable Graphics Processor
* 20GB HD

"recommended" requirements

* 1 GHz Intel-compatible processor
* 1GB RAM
* DirectX 9.0-Capable Graphics Processor, with 128MB graphics memory. (64MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor less than 1,310,720 pixels [no more than 1440x900]; 128MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolutions from 1,310,720 to 2,304,000 pixels [no more than 1920x1200]; 256MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolutions higher than 2,304,000 pixels [more than 1920x1200]).
* 40GB HD with at least 15GB "free space"

Its probably not worth running on a machine that doesnt meet the "recommended" requirements, just my two cents.

You're really going to want:

- 3 Ghz single core or 1.5 Ghz dual core CPU
- 2 GB RAM
- GPU with 256 MB of video RAM or more

XP's recommended minimums were like a PII 400 Mhz and 256 MB of RAM. Don't see anybody psycho enough to run it on that though, do you?

Or to put it another way..... enough power to run 4 full-blown Linux desktops.

I've run it on a 800Mhz Athlon and it works fine... about the same speed as XP. The only difference is I couldn't run the "aero" user interface. That is where you need the power (more so in the graphics card than anything else).

Let me know how you enjoy the extra restrictions only present in 64-bit Vista over the lifetime of the product.

You'd do well to see you never do.

512 is pretty much the norm now... so the jump to 768 isn't that big of a deal. Either way, as I said before, I don't have a very fast CPU and Vista runs just fine.

All I know is, sales reps are pushing machines with 2GB RAM to run Vista. Now, whether that's because they get commission from the hardware companies, or honest opinion, I don't know.

I personally wouldn't trust Vista on anything less than 1 GB, as I only have 512MB and XP runs like a dog some days.
