Brick City Pirate Wrote:Omni, While ECU has a good alumni base in Charlotte, I think ECU would probably get a bigger piece of the tv sets in the Tidewater, Virginia region since we have a ton of alumni from that area & ECU would be the closest BCS D1a football school. I also think all 3 CUSA schools, that are being mentioned, would make fine additions to the Big East. I feel that if CUSA had to lose a conference member, it would probably rather lose ECU, since we are so far east. I don't think the BE Commish will ever make a move, unless for a football only member. If that's the case, it would probably rule out Memphis, not because Memphis wouldn't accept a football only membership, but due to their powerful basketball program. I think after a year or two, there would be a ton of pressure to add the Memphis basketball program. The BE Commish already has a tough time keeping everyone happy, having a thriving Memphis basketball program on the outside looking in, might rock the already shakey BE boat to the point of sinking. I also wonder if there might be a behind the scene deal between the CUSA Commish & the BE Commish to leave Memphis alone, since the BE Commish was up in arms about the way the BE raid was handled by the ACC Commish. Once the BE Commish resigns, I think there will definitely be a shakeup. It will be interesting to see what happens at that time.

ECU already gets a significant portion of the Norfolk DMA due to how it is structured. Most NE North Carolina counties already prefer the Greenville area stations. According to local ratings.

Actual Virginia markets are not that simple. That state line is a VERY powerful thing. We do have links on some of the "Tidewater" area newspapers and TV stations, we have coverage on the radio, some of our merchandise is in local sports stores. BCS affiliation will help some but we will never be the main player or even top 2 in that market.

Hoquista Wrote:Here are the differences between the regions (in millions) for DMAs:

Greenville-New Bern-Washington: 1.434
Memphis: 0.668
Greenville-New Bern-Washington: 0.276

And the 'potential' markets for ECU as noted
Charlotte: 1.085
Raleigh: 1.039
Norfolk: 0.717

I am not sure what these numbers mean??

The actual "Designated Market Area" for each is...

Greenville DMA is 0.6 million.
Memphis DMA is 1.4 million.
Orlando DMA is 2.7 million.
Charlotte DMA is 2.1 million.
Raleigh DMA is 2.1 million.
Norfolk DMA is 1.5 million.

TP, I think you are underestimating the Commish's influence. He is the CEO. He guides the conference, just as a CEO guides a large company. In the end, the college presidents have to sign off on decisions that affect their respective school, but the Commish is the only person who's sole mission is directing the conference. He has to be the most influentual person in relation to conference decisions.

Norfolk DMA

What is ridiculous when you look at the Norfolk DMA is that 3 of the communities listed actually have ECU affiliated Hospitals!!! 03-banghead

I think what is confusing is the following:

The first market area given by Hoquista was suppose to be Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne, not Greenville-New Bern-Washington.

The second is that Hoquista is actually using TV Households whereas the site you are referencing is using TV viewers.

You can find the TVHHs numbers at this site:

DMAs - TV Households

TVHHs are always a lower number than TV viewers. Ad rates are usually based upon the number of households being reached. TV ratings take into consideration both.

Hope that clears up the confusion.

Cheers,
Neil

Sorry about that. What I am showing is the estimated number of TV households by the Neilson Media Research and not the # of viewers of the DMA.

EDIT: Omni beat me to it. Again, sorry about the confusion. Also, I edited the post and didn't realize that I put Greenville twice. I really should doublecheck my posts! 03-banghead

The STATE of North Carolina feeds all three and more.

And this is a Big East board. And last I checked there are no programs from the Tobacco state in this conference, so please take this pi$$ing contest somewhere else. 04-chairshot

Good point about the trash talk. I guess that's college athletics for ye. Oh, and it's the Old North State, or Tar Heel State, if you will.

Well...if ECU's tradition/history even mattered...ECU would be in the Big East...and USF wouldn't.

Sadly, its all about the Benjamins these days...tradition/history be damned in this dog-eat-dog world of major college sports.

No problem.

It's too bad we are not playing each other anymore. I enjoyed those games in the 90's.

Have a good life.

Peace
