Oh crap!
If that center track holds, the eye will pass right over Lafayette

Edit: Doesn't look like it will now with the latest projection (8/27/08 10 am CDT)

I hope you can make it to the game in Hattiesburg on Saturday and make it home safely. It should be a good game. Be careful.

We made a decision tonight that we are still going to Hattiesburg tomorrow. We had a hotel room to stay the night, but we canceled the reservation. We will be driving back as soon as the game is over/out of reach.

I do not like the current projected path of this storm. The center line will take the eye directly over Lafayette. We are going to ride out the storm in Lafayette.

RE: Oh crap!
Gustav is close to making landfall around the Southwest Pass near the Mississippi River. They are projecting the eye to pass directly over Lafayette at some point near mid-afternoon today. I'm hoping to get some pictures of the storm as the day progresses. I'd really like to get some pictures of the eye passing over Lafayette. I have not yet experienced the eye of a storm yet; we were close for Andrew in 1992. I hear it's a pretty interesting experience to have 90-100+ mph winds and then just silence for about 15-30 minutes.

Remanats of the eye is about 20 miles away from Lafayette. Should be here in about an hour.

Just lost power for about 10 seconds, but it obviously came back.

Lost power for 3 hours. Eye passed just west of us, but we did experience a little bit of the calmness of the eye. Was pretty interesting to see 60-70+ mph winds and rain and then just a light drizzle in a matter of minutes.

I experienced similar with Hurricane Georges in Ocean Springs in '98. The winds howling and shingles flying off to the north. Then there was a calm for what seemed hours (maybe 45 minutes) as the eye passed. The winds began whipping up again, only this time the shingles were flying in a different direction.

The water in the bayou behind the apartment complex I lived in came almost to my patio door. The next day the Game and Fish people had to be called to take care of all the alligators that decided they liked the higher land inside the complex. Scary times.
